This picture is my grandmother's friend Joy

If you missed my initial post, here are the instructions again.

- The subject line of the email should read "Vintage Photo"

- The photos will only be posted here on the blog, so the file size can be very small (no bigger than 700kb). I DO NOT need hi-res images, they take too long to download.

- Writing a little something about the image you send will make your entry much more interesting for all of us.

- Email your photos to: sartorialistvintagephotos@gmail.com

Anonymous Portia said ... (10:18 AM) :

Was dressing always a pleasure back then? Or was it a pain to look your best always? Or were the clothes you bought simply just always tailored to look fine on people so as a result you could never really look anything but pulled together?

Her charisma explodes from the photograph. And she is clearly happy to be on vacation. Radiant smile, knockout figure and chic, practical glad rags!

Blogger Mary said ... (7:48 PM) :

Looks so much like Ingrid Bergman! Happy smile, nice shorts and shirt - and look at that suitcase being carried in such an unusual way! The late forties after WW2 were such great times - and I was there, but just a baby, lol!

Still hoping to see my vintage photo here - sent some time back - my mum and her twin brother in their very English thirties clothes!

Thanks, Mary

Anonymous vintage engagement rings said ... (8:15 PM) :

I truly love your vintage photos... what a smile!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:29 AM) :

So easy and elegant and her name is perfect for her. What would a holidaying young woman canoeist wear now? Nylon mesh baseball cap, loud t shirt, unflattering cargo shorts? Not many tiny waists left either. I shall start my situps immediately, review my scarf collection for summer and think joyfully!

Classic style epitomised

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:20 PM) :

Style never die.

Anonymous FeeFee said ... (1:37 PM) :

I love her expression!

The only thing is, it might be the fit of her clothes, but she seems to have very odd proportions. Broad shoulders and a VERY small waist? It might simply be that she's very thin but strong. Either way, love the outfit even if there's a bit of awkwardness in it.

Anonymous Maryanne said ... (2:55 PM) :

love the classic ease of this outfit.
using a scarf as a belt..splendid.
women had their 'own natural' faces back then...which was beautiful.
something the 'botox generation' could learn a lesson from.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:31 PM) :

I have been in search for a shirt like that. So versatile, so easy, so light. I'm jealous!

Blogger lollipop4598 said ... (6:15 PM) :

It really is amazing how well much of the vintage styles fir in today. She looks great. And she has very toned legs.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:45 PM) :

I suspect that a lot of these stylish people didn't have closets stuffed with outfits, but the few they did have were chosen with care and treasured. What a delightful shot. Joy is aptly named.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:59 AM) :

She looks like Lauren Bacall, so elegant and confident.

Blogger Eline said ... (3:52 AM) :

She is looking amazing!
Funny to see how all the fashion trends are coming back from time to time.

Anonymous Helen said ... (8:50 PM) :

I love that she was essentially wearing men's clothes, ala Katherine Hepburn, and doing it so sexily! She looks comfortable, free and full of life! Christian Dior's "New Look" was to come along in just a couple of years and drown this strong, independent look, replacing it with cinched waists, huge skirts, and frilly aprons. What a shame!

Blogger Christine@100things100days said ... (12:39 AM) :

This is pure class! Wish I was her.
