Blogger Meredith M Howard said ... (9:46 AM) :

She is beautiful, and I love her short bangs. The cape is gorgeous; however, I would have liked it better if it was shorter and she showed a little bit of leg with it.

Blogger Lila C. said ... (9:48 AM) :

I love her bangs and how they part a little off center, and how it seems like she's holding her bag effortlessly (when in fact it's being worn like a necklace) and above all, I love the uneven hem with the vintage shoes (that might have even been stolen from a museum) sticking out.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

I love these styles of coats, we've seen this type before. All white, it probably reverses and can be worn inside out. I also happen to love the white chiffon skirts that are so popular now. Funny, that while the runways are promoting certain looks, ie: color blocking, and so on, the population is going in another direction. White for summer is timeless. And we're still in love with vintage.

I agree that this lovely photo reminds me of an August Sander. If I remember correctly from that interesting short last year, he is a big influence for you, Sart, no?

One thing that I find interesting is that so many people also found the same angel/ghostly feeling as last weeks photo of Abbey Lee. Happily, this time without the body issues, but is it only because she is wearing something that shows nothing of her body?

I have this little feeling I'm being tweaked with the "angelic," "divine," "pure," and "goddess" comments, but in this case I'm happy to be tweaked. Bravo. (and brava, to her)
And if the people entering those comments missed the thread with the last all-in-white, long-skirt image, well then, that's even more interesting. What about this mode of self-presentation resonates so uniformly?

with a grand outfit as this, just thinking she could look even better with her hair up in a bun to show off the details around the neckline. OH...well...

Someone* in the previous "In All White" (On the Street...via A. Sciesa, Milan) post brought up whether people would still see a woman in head to toe white, flowy clothing as angelic if she were not white herself. Obviously some do, but there is a difference.

While both were called angels (the first woman more often than the second), another word often used to describe the first woman was ethereal. Meaning delicate, too perfect, otherwordly. The descriptions of this woman's angelic qualities seem much more earthbound. She brings to mind the angel/savior (Florence Nightingale) or angel/Madonna (Mary) or even angel/missionary. Not only is she not too perfect for this world, but she's an angel with work to do.

The textures of their clothes and styles of their clothes, and the way the light hits them might also contribute. (Would simply switching outfits change the responses, too? I don't know how often dark-skinned women are described as ethereal). But, as that commenter suggested, racial characteristics are coded. Comparing these pictures and the responses is a lesson in how we do that.

*Curious @ 11:04 AM.

I feel like in terms of the previous photo of another women in all white the same words are being tossed around. Words like "angelic" "ethereal" and "goddess" proving that the racial connotations some people where implying in the previous post are not present in the way they believed. An interesting fact to point out in your next book Scott.

Interesting that no one seems horrified to read comments on this black woman looking like an angel, when comments on the white woman in white (a few days ago)looking angelic were read as horribly racist.

Maravillosa. Reminds me the Romanic Art paintings... and her hand looks like from "El Caballero de la Mano en el Pecho" from "El Greco"... great pic

Eerie, ethereal and elegant. Is this perhaps a wedding dress under the cape? The shoes appear to be satin. Is that too simplistic of me to consider?

very very interesting shot. i would not describe this image as flattering for her facial features, but it's hauntingly beautiful.
