Could that be because there's not a model or fashion magazine editor among them? A very nice and neat look for her. The bag, shoes, skirt, and ribbon around the belt all complement each other very well. The pale blue blouse is lovely and the darker blue jacket anchors the whole thing. Not sure about the socks though. They seem to fit the look but there is something not right about them. Maybe a little to high?

This may be one of my favourite outfits you've shot so far! Everything about it is either quirky or classic. This is very emblematic of a particular type of Melbourne style: eccentric to the point of perversity. For me it sort of works, and is well done, but it's also just a bit ugly somehow. But that is Melbourne. It does its thing without much reference to the fashion worlds of the northern hemisphere. It's part of what makes it such a great place to live.

I wish however, that you got some photos of the 'beach style' of Sydney. Its classic, and i haven't seen any other country manage to pull of the swagger of thongs, boardies and a VB.

I think the outfit is a bit frumpy and old-ladyish in a not-so-great way, and the colors seem unflattering and kind of harsh (as does the haircut). But it's still interesting and better than a typical New York fashion editor outfit. The socks actually work for me with the outfit but not with the sandals. A perfect pair of well-made mary janes (Chie Miharas?) in the same color as the sandals would have been sooo much better.

Wow....such a unique style in Melbourne as shown in these last several photos. I absolutely LOVE that conformity doesn't seem to rule as much there as in other large cities. The colours here are fantastic. As a seamstress and artist, however, my eyes can't help but be drawn right to the pull in her skirt....but then I get over it. Ha!

I really like this outfit, although on first glance the socks look like athletic socks. I don't mind socks with heels, but somehow they look too mannish on her and do not flatter her legs. The rest is great, love the skirt.

the combo of the jacket with the shirt, not loving it
and then the skirt with the belt plus the socks and shoes...

If Virginia Woolf had lived in the 50s/early 60s, this is how she would have looked.

I knew that blue and orange were complimentary colors but this is one of the few times I see this well done.

And me who always post saying "great looks but what happens when the person is in motion", here one knows motion is only going to add to the look.

Those socks aren't working for me either... I think it's because from the waist down she's very girly, but the socks make it a bit too twee to balance her more androgynous top half.

Why are you making this young lady wrong for what she is doing? You have no idea what she was thinking when getting dressed. however the way you phrase your comment makes it seem that she tried something and failed.

This blog is not about making people wrong for their choices. It is about seeing what we can get inspired by in their attempts.

Let's be honest, you thought you had come up with an oh so witty comment and you're pissed that I tried to protect you from looking like a judgmental ass.

To anonymous who asked about the bag: I have a bag that's very similar. I found mine at a thrift stall in Daegu, ROK. There's a stamp on the top edge that reads "Kissmmee London." I've never been able to find any information about "Kissmmee" and I assume it could be a well-made knockoff of a high end brand.

I love the colors in this outfit -- especially the play between the color of the belt and the skirt, which is highlighted and tied together with the blue jacket.

She reminded me instantly of a prim schoolteacher or librarian. But I do see the genius in how she wears her clothes - the colors are beautiful, the socks keep it a bit jarring. Not a look I could pull off, but I am so inspired by seeing these Australian shots. Reminds me how little my world can be and many great ideas are out there.
Oh, and I really love her bag: color, style, patina of the leather.

I think this combination of colors is fascinating, and it clearly demonstrates how one can achieve a stunning visual effect by mixing bold with delicate colors (if one knows what one is doing, of course). On the other hand, the white-socks-with-light-brown-sandals combo doesn't do it for me. I've seen this look a lot lately and I've learned to like really heavy wooden wedges with darker socks or stockings, paired with a delicate dress (like in Chloe and Prada 2006 runway collections). But the socks with sandals here look to me a little too "fifties-soda-fountain" (an instant association with Lea Thompson's outfits in the first "Back to the Future"). Perhaps that was the idea, but I don't get it.
Still, a very interesting photo.

This is the type of person i would like to see on the streets. Her Blazer is more than awesome. I wish i had this color in my wardrobe. Makes my day brighter. the lace and the skirt add something sweet and everything with blue seems to work very well... even those socks... which could have been wrong... somehow are not.... vintage and edgy. It is people like this young lady who express their creativity in their daily lives and dress in such exceptional outfits, that I believe make our lives so much more rich, interesting and lively. I can be walking along, just thinking my usual thoughts and then see something like this outfit- all of a sudden my heart skips a beat, my mood changes and a flash of creative thoughts enters my mind. Personally, I don't care too much whether her outfit is my taste, if the socks don't work with the shoes or where she got her skirt from. She has had the courage to wear something out of the ordinary and by doing so inspires and affects others in ways she probably doesn't even realise. Well done- she looks wonderful.

What I like about her is the complexity: the dress is very young-lady-like, the bob hair? Boyish. There is a little sex and a little reserve -- a bit of reserve, even the expression and collar -- after an aggressive color contrast in "Madonna"-like blue against the belt, bag, and shoes.

This girl is really intriguing. What is she? An architect? A millner? If it seems costume-y to some, so be it -- I want to ask her out for coffee. There's mystery here.

It's too bad there isn't more of a close up, but from this distance it looks like the necklace is a homage to the great Joan Holloway of Mad Men fame.

If intentional, it was a very nice touch, the cherry on top of a perfect reference; the button up blouse suggests an office appropriate choice, but the pop of bright blue is simply signature Holloway.

If unintentional, it still remains a good example of how pop culture or even the zeitgeist (indeed the 60's have never seemed so relevant) of an era seeps into fashion. A reminder that the fashion does not exist in a vacuum and shouldn't.

Perhaps money makes us lazy and in this recession, such a realisation for designers would bring back the poignant relevance of fashion (one can't deny that sometimes, it is so obviously hollow and superficial). Fashion is not only a projection of who we are, but the world which shapes us. But good fashion projects who we want to be, and the world we want to live in.

the color combination is great, the bag rocks, and the necklace looks great. Unfortunately, the socks and shoes are the focal point and take away from what the rest of the outfit does to flatter her. We should be looking UP not down.
