At Dior

I really loved the idea of the sheer jackets at Dior. With the transparency of the jackets it would have been interesting to play with contrast colors for the layering pieces. At least that is what I would do if/when I buy this jacket.

This reminds me of the traditional formal Filipino sheer dress shirts.

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:54 PM) :

Hmmmm? I like the idea...I just probably wouldn't wear it. It does look pretty cool, and if I would've been attending that fashion show I definitely would've been wowed! The idea is really creative!

Transparency is something I saw on last years shows as well, particularly at Kilgour in Paris (the Savile Row tailor), I guess Dior picked up on it too!

Anonymous Questioner said ... (6:10 PM) :

A fashion statement crying out for rebuttal.

I just can't see many men flocking to this trend. I suppose a sheer jacket is more forgiving than the sheer shirts that have appeared on the runways. At least you won't feel like you have to wax your chest.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:19 PM) :

an olden idea...i have a shady one from rick owens, two seasons ago...and one from 80's CDG...buy one from dior???i don't think so!!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:20 PM) :

The layering must be perfect underneath. No wrinkles allowed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:40 PM) :

i think this model looks cute, but there are not a lot of people who could wear this jacket... much too revealing, and if not done right it will just look tacky

Anonymous Watch Free Online TV Unlimited said ... (6:52 PM) :

Yeah you're right Rylan. Who's the designer of this dress? Maybe he/ she is a Filipino.

Blogger Brigadeiro said ... (7:05 PM) :

I would layer too! Love sheer over stripes and other subtle patterns & colours...

Gorgeous jacket!

Anonymous Fredrik said ... (7:26 PM) :

The Swedish brand Acne has already made a version of this, and according to me it's a lot better.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:29 PM) :

It would be quite fun to come up with different outfits with this jacket

Blogger Landis said ... (7:30 PM) :

ack. no to color beneath, but agreed on loving the layering. something rick owens has done beautifully for years. if you have the means to layer three hundred dollar tees . . .

Blogger m.roq said ... (7:38 PM) :

yes it's like a Barong from the Philippines

Blogger Menucha photography said ... (7:39 PM) :

i love it because of the transparent look.it adds texture.

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:43 PM) :

another piece worth borrowing..imagine using contrasting thread to "finish" insides seams...sigh

Blogger a reference said ... (8:32 PM) :

did you get to go to the couture shows? i would love to see your perspective on those...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:32 PM) :

This should have been left as an idea. I can see fashion trying to push this on women for a season, but it's really absurd on a man. I could just hate it because what's under it happens to be a t-shirt (which is a questionable-at-best LA vice, even with a solid jacket). Perhaps it would be better with a proper shirt? Either way, any man wearing this in a serious manner off the runway should have some sense slapped into him. Bruce Pask looks slightly confused/disappointed as well.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:49 PM) :

I like how well you can see seaming details; those little sleeveheads on the back panels! excellent!

Anonymous Peregrine said ... (8:57 PM) :

Reminds me of the jacket my uncle wore to my parents' wedding; a black undershirt with a white jacket like this would look great.

great jacket! & the color is stunning for fall.

like those layered architecteral type drawings, where semi translucent vellum-ish materials are used over colors to create depth and atmospheric distance.

The concept of a summer blazer has reached a pinnacle. And yes, layer has also been brought to a whole new level with this piece. I like that this particular jacket is a neutral shade to maximize versatility. I honestly wouldn't mind an outrageous paisley dress shirt if it was paired with this.

Blogger TokyoTon said ... (9:50 PM) :

Japanese businessmen have been wearing semi-sheer jackets in the summer for years

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:56 PM) :

wow. imagine the possibilities with that jacket

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:17 PM) :

This is a really interesting idea. Has this ever been done before? This would make it fun to show off shirts with unique patterns. I definitely agree that playing with contrast would be really interesting.

Anonymous Holly said ... (10:22 PM) :

That is such a clever idea.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:24 PM) :

sleeve length on the layering pieces would also be important - is that a cap sleeve on the model?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 PM) :

The 7th, eighth, and nineth look after this particular garment... I desperately want! What an amazing show, I'm not too sure if I could pull the sheer shirts/jackets look off. Or for that matter the sleeve-less items. :(

Blogger Vinicius Francisco said ... (10:54 PM) :

amezing !!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 PM) :

I don't think that this jacket is that great, innovative definitely, but just too forward for me.
love your work though Sart!

Blogger Joe said ... (11:55 PM) :

Also the Barong which is a traditional Filipino dress shirt for men.

I would definitely contrast it as well, especially with a nice pocket square in the summer. Like it.

Blogger fashionscout said ... (1:00 AM) :

I LOVE this, at least in theory. It never occurred to me. Women have so many great sheer tops, so why not men?

Blogger José Cabral said ... (1:06 AM) :

A few of the evening jackets reminded me of what Proenza Schoukler did for fall 2008, with this inside-out, paper plane idea.

Blogger Jamie Jonathan Ball said ... (2:09 AM) :

i can understand what you mean about layering colours but dont you think the colour of the jacket would just make the underlying colours look a little off and dirty?

Anonymous AG said ... (2:14 AM) :

for me this is very close but not quite there.

I have never tried to construct a blazer but if they could do something about the bit on fabric that is not sheer under the back shoulders without compromising the structure...

then there is the problem that if this gets popular it will be dated next year. (as shallow as that is)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:24 AM) :

I love the sheer thats going on

Anonymous Lauri Tikerpe said ... (2:29 AM) :

Blogger so_crispy said ... (2:56 AM) :

True, Rylan, it's like the jacket form of the Filipino barong. Definitely great for layering and humid weather!

Blogger spore said ... (3:06 AM) :

Superb! The craftsmanship needed to create a clean garment like this should be applauded.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:37 AM) :

I get what you mean about the colours for layering pieces.

I love that every seam, every detail of this jacket is on show.

Blogger Life99 said ... (6:50 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:56 AM) :

that´s not knew at all, Ann Demeulemeester made that jacket for the current spring summer season....and in a more inspirational way.

Blogger No said ... (8:12 AM) :

I can't believe this didn't happen sooner, its brilliant!

Blogger brandt said ... (9:32 AM) :

It's so gimmicky, how many times could you wear it?

Just seems like they are trying too hard to be different. It would be hard to justify the price.

Blogger Miiicha said ... (10:08 AM) :

oooh great :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:24 AM) :

Kilgour showed a better version of the sheer jacket last year.

Anonymous lintmag said ... (10:46 AM) :

I don't think a lot of men will try this, but I do think it would be great for women. It's always fun to see something on the street that you take a second glance at, like, wait...was that...?? It could also be cool done with a printed lining.

Anonymous PrettyBoy Forever said ... (10:47 AM) :

I love it. It's always nice to show some man-nipple and man-breast. And my stomach is totally flat, so why not?
I would totally rock this jacket sans shirt. I am not super gay and I have not spent a fortune at various gyms for nothing !!! J'adore Dior

Anonymous Ingrid said ... (10:50 AM) :

Oh
My

This is AbFab and totally revolutionary you guys. My word! Whoever designed this is a genius in my book. I can't wait to start Fashion School in the fall. I wish we had fashion like this in Utah :(

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:51 AM) :

I'd rather see you in a see-through suit . . .

Blogger Dan in Richmond said ... (12:22 PM) :

The sheer jacket is brilliant. I'd love to see this type of innovation more often in men's fashion. You could experiment with endless combinations underneath, but my first thought was different than yours; that I'd wear a monochromatic outfit with it- I don't like seeing the shirt/pants transition through the jacket in this photo, but maybe in person. It's fun to see something new that's actually interesting and shows great possibilities.

Blogger GodfreyKate said ... (12:31 PM) :

Nice idea. Intriguing choice of color. But the faces in the background make the shot for me. Each one tells a different story.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 PM) :

What a fantastic idea. I would buy it and wear it on my travels during the hot season. Great!

Blogger BetwixtandBetween said ... (12:57 PM) :

This is so beyond perfect!!! I love it, and I love the idea of contrasting colours.

Blogger Tereneh Idia said ... (1:52 PM) :

Gentleman Sart,

I think your point about contrasting colors is a wonderful idea, tonal as you showed in an early post would be interesting too. The sheerness is intriguing on two other levels: 1. To show the construction of the jacket the architectural nature of clothing. 2. sheerness adds a sensuality to men's clothing that is often lacking, to imagine what is underneath the jacket even more the lovely lines of the male form: the torso the back, the shoulders, very sexy.

Blogger SallyO said ... (3:37 PM) :

Will they make pants to match the jacket? I hope so...

Blogger Ivy Lane said ... (4:40 PM) :

No good with sweaty armpits!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:51 PM) :

Sheer jackets have been done and done. even from a menswear student at central saint martins at a degree show back in 2006! not so much novelty here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:07 PM) :

Didn't Ann Demeulemeester do a sheer linnen jacket for her SS09? Again no creativity at LVMH.

Blogger LuxuryObsessed.com said ... (10:20 PM) :

Blogger miss d said ... (3:09 AM) :

yes about the asian jackets~ Koreans have been doing it for years! summer formal way - no better way to do it!

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:17 AM) :

Agree with the commenter who posted about how this showed off the lovely seams, sleeve caps. It truly is a look into the architecture of a jacket, and I applaud that.

Anonymous Haute Topic said ... (12:42 PM) :

Oh I love the idea of a sheer blazer for men! I would have never thought of this to be dont this way.

Blogger Avyn said ... (4:52 PM) :

I can imagine this jacket matched with somethnig steely gray. The shoulder detailing and lines of the back seem masculine creating a perfect balance.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:12 AM) :

Finally! I have been waiting way too many seasons for the houses to come out with a sheer jacket. I guess not many of them know any Filipinos! Anywho. . . it's about time Paris, so much for being ahead of the curve.

These kinds of sheer jackets are really popular in Japan- it makes sense, since its so hot and humid here. Comfy and stylin'. =)

Blogger Brandie Herbst said ... (11:29 AM) :

I adore the sheer jackets!!! You can really play up colors, textures and inventive layering underneath! A veil over a creative juxtaposition!

Blogger Brandie Herbst said ... (11:33 AM) :

It also reminds me of the transparent jacket Cher (Alicia Silverstone) wore in the movie Clueless over her white Calvin Klein dress!

Like so many things in European fashion, this is a stolen idea from other cultures. Clearly this is taken from the Barong Tagalog : Filipino traditional dress shirts for men, made of pineapple fiber.
