On the Street......Sweater Shorts, Sydney

Sydney weather at this time of year is just like New York. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, and cool evenings - layering like this is a great option. Even without the sweater the look still feels refined with the shirt buttoned-up like that.

I love this cind of pants. They are so cute, fashionable at the moment and interesting. Love it, you must have a very good inspiration to dress like this.

Anonymous Esmoquin room said ... (10:09 AM) :

Nice oversize sweater. I love those pants!!!

Best!

Super cool outfit

Blogger junglesiren said ... (10:54 AM) :

Oh, Sart. Come on.

The ankle sneakers and the giant sweater and the prim touch of the buttoned-up shirt - it's too incoherent on a grown man.

Minus the shirt, we see this look pretty much everywhere but it only works with a surf or skateboard in hand and if you say "dude" a lot.

I DO like his hair and his expression and the way he's standing.... his glasses too.

Anonymous suzanne nelson said ... (10:56 AM) :

Great proportions! i love the way he's pulled his sweate neck over like that. this photo made me smile, i just really like his look!

Blogger Adam said ... (11:12 AM) :

clearly illustrative of the distinction between "well-dressed" and "fashionable." Interesting proportion, but he looks like an absolute fool

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:14 AM) :

I have been watching at your Australian pictures.

I was not expecting any original or historical style from that part of the world.

I take away a confirmation.

But tell me, how did you like it?

Vincent

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:22 AM) :

i love his trousers, they're wonderful!

Blogger pete v said ... (11:23 AM) :

hmmmm...

Blogger Stephanie Clayton said ... (11:32 AM) :

Oh no....Not the extreme drop-crotch again! And in plaid?!
His sweater is too large but it might look all right if his pants weren't so ridiculous.
I do like his glasses and the buttoned up white shirt.

Blogger SallyO said ... (11:35 AM) :

What??? Refined? Are we looking at the same picture? I don't even know where to begin...

Anonymous amanda e said ... (11:47 AM) :

homeless chic anyone? not lovin the pants but i love the nonchalance in the way he wore his sweater.

Blogger natalie said ... (11:51 AM) :

he is my size

Anonymous princess glee said ... (12:00 PM) :

The refined top half looks as though it was Photoshopped to the messy bottom half. So I like this look 50%.

Blogger yes and no said ... (12:01 PM) :

The glasses are great.

Blogger hc said ... (12:21 PM) :

ahh nothing like day drinking in spring with post brunch malaise, such ease.

Blogger reverend dick said ... (12:32 PM) :

Robert Smith.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:41 PM) :

He works at Ksubi I think.

Anonymous Chris Yo said ... (12:43 PM) :

You beat me to it Stephanie Clayton. Exactly!

Blogger Angeles Almuna said ... (12:53 PM) :

I love those pants!!!!!!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:54 PM) :

He looks like someone who stumbles in late for class.

Anonymous Adi said ... (12:58 PM) :

this is like Hansen gone wrong...maybe "fashionable" but looks horrid in reality

Anonymous adrian said ... (1:25 PM) :

i was kind of hoping the low crotch look had died forever but i guess it just moved to australia.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:31 PM) :

I don't know: that askew sweater is a little too "flashdance" for my taste.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:01 PM) :

Sart,

Great summer looks in Australia...

I really feel I have to ask you about this -- I noticed a little trend in Montreal, long men neck ties, passing the crotch, 1/4 to 1/2 way down the thigh.

I think its a great look, it has the motion of a scarf. Have you seen this around? What are your thoughts?

S

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:25 PM) :

It's funny that people are taking his look so seriously; he's just having a laugh. I'd never dress like that, but I love his sense of playfulness!

Blogger thwany said ... (3:09 PM) :

love it.

Blogger John said ... (5:08 PM) :

refined? riiiight

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (5:40 PM) :

This is excellent!

Blogger lindsey said ... (5:42 PM) :

I like this look from about the top of the head to the mid-shoulder. After that, it's awful! Maybe I am missing something but this is just unflattering and he looks ridiculous and clownish. If this is the direction fashion is moving in, let me get off while I still can.

Blogger Brigadeiro said ... (5:46 PM) :

A buttoned shirt (all the way to the top, no less), with the oversized slouchy jumper & harem shorts, bashed up converse...ah! And the glasses - love it!
xx

Anonymous Sonali said ... (6:06 PM) :

He looks sloppy. Despite that, I still think he's very handsome. Now that's style!

Blogger aliisha said ... (6:42 PM) :

I can picture him wiping his nose on that sleeve.

Anonymous Amy said ... (6:49 PM) :

I agree that he looks like someone who overslept, grabbed some close out of the hamper, and still hasn't had a cup of coffee. This look doesn't do it for me, sorry.

Blogger sblazer227 said ... (7:23 PM) :

Sloppy, whether by accident or not, has never been seen as a good look by me.

Anonymous SteveA said ... (8:43 PM) :

is that joelllllll?

Blogger M&S said ... (8:46 PM) :

One word : Perfect
<3 best look

Anonymous Zenas313 said ... (9:06 PM) :

I would agree that this look seems extreme - but what one can take away from it is the idea of a patterned short, white shirt and a (moderately)oversized v-neck for spring layering. His hair and the glasses are right on. Its a great look if done in moderation; but thanks to the over the top take on it here for making it stand out.

chapeau

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:20 PM) :

I'm so proud of Sydney for stacking up with the rest of the world on your blog. Even if in a slightly different way.

Blogger X said ... (9:39 PM) :

i'm not sold on the outfit...

but I like that pants.

Blogger noelakadjtambour said ... (9:55 PM) :

the photo is excellent throughout, the look is better from the waist up though

Blogger just.a.train said ... (10:10 PM) :

Wa~h! That looks so comfortable! I like how he can carry off the oversized clothing look and manage to avoid looking sloppy. And I want his sweater.

Blogger CW said ... (10:13 PM) :

Dork chic.

Blogger heals77 said ... (10:30 PM) :

I want to cuddle up to this guy...where can I get one?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:32 PM) :

i think this looks delicious. i would like to be friends with him! yum.

Anonymous Amy said ... (11:44 PM) :

Looks like he put his legs thru the arms of a jacket. I like his white shirt, glasses, hair, face...but the rest of it...not so much.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 AM) :

Refined? There's little about this look that could possibly be termed "refined."

Blogger GZ said ... (1:18 AM) :

Oh dear. I think he's wearing a sack. And those shoes are not acceptable, not like that.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:28 AM) :

I think the sweater makes him look a lot heavier than he really is. Also the low crotch on the shorts make his torso/legs look so disproportionate, which I'm not a huge fan of. HOWEVER, the swear looks amazingly comfortable. It looks made to wear sitting around the apartment on a sunday morning, coffee and newspaper in hand. I also like the mixture of patterns/textures. The glasses are lovely.
xx

Blogger Amir Olavi said ... (6:51 AM) :

Cool outfit, love the pattern of the shorts. There's a certain silhuette in these three last pictures, elongated torso, sloping soft shoulders and low hung trousers/skirt. Stylized one, like a drawing. I dig it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:01 AM) :

Just so people other countries know, this is him expressing himself, not a distinctly Australian fashion taste. I think many fashion conscious Aussies would wonder why he does this(me included) but he is expressing himself the way he likes, at least that part is cool.

I still don't get it though, it looks like he got a plaid shirt mixed up for pants. POOPY!

Blogger Alex said ... (7:59 AM) :

Sorry, but this isn't cool at all. How on earth is he supposed to walk normally with a crotch that low? And the shoes are a disaster.

Blogger James Drewe said ... (8:02 AM) :

You're all forgetting that Scott gets inspirations from part of these outfits, its not always about the whole look. In this case he's even told us - it's about the layering.

So what if the guy is wearing dirty cons or he has baggy pants, the inspiration has come from the 'how' he is wearing the clothes, not the 'what'. Some of you need to pull your head out and step down from the pedestal...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:48 AM) :

love the expression on his face, and the glasses.

like others, not sure about the pants, i think they kinda ruin the look...

Blogger crazy cat lady said ... (9:03 AM) :

i think i look like that when i wake up :-), less good looking, of course :-p

Anonymous Sally said ... (2:12 PM) :

i wish i were wearing that right now! it's perfect!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:14 PM) :

the pants are a little large but, the cut is something i hope to reproduce for myself. but I'll be wearing it with heels and a smaller proportioned shirt.

Blogger Olviya said ... (4:30 PM) :

thats such a luck - to have special sense... of wearing clothes in such relaxed way...

Anonymous Questioner said ... (4:52 PM) :

Everything old is new again, I guess. This look like what I wore in college in the mid-80's, except for the drop-crotch. I wonder if he ever wears a brooch at his buttoned-up collar and an oversized thrift shop blazer with the sleeves rolled up.

I think I'll listen to the Smiths this afternoon.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:15 PM) :

the pants might be by henrik vibskov from the s/s2008 collection. they have some similar ones this year as well

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:33 PM) :

Layering??? Refined???
You're joking, no?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:45 PM) :

This looks like it belongs more to Facehunter than Sartorialist.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:40 AM) :

the shorts/pants are from Henrik Vibsov, Danish designer.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:57 AM) :

Come on, people, do not be so narrow-minded. This is great blog and interesting comments in it - thanks to everyone, however, sometimes it seems that the only look what most of You, guys, find fashionable and worth mentioning is something tight and branded. It is not a science to find the right colors that match, slim and a bit short trusers, slim shirt and jacket, hot shoes, throw on a scarf and highlight it with some bright accessory. But this is all the same... Indeed, this extremely tight look looks awful with skinny bodies, what is majority on the streets. However this is something different, this is individual touch. Think out of the box - this is not about, how to dress "the right way", but rather interesting way and way that fits Your lifestyle, body, situation and grabs the attention. It is not about this particular photo and probably the guy is not the style icon, but rather about the overall opinion in general. be opened, be enthusiastic, be creative! Peace! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:22 AM) :

ok if the point of the blog was to take photos of people who look good in a normal sense then he would be taking photos of everybody. the point is that this look is unique to this individual and that is why it is worth photographing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:49 AM) :

Overall, I'd give him credit for creating and even pulling off this "homeless chic" look (or whatever you want to call it) but I really don't like the extreme drop-crotch pants. It's gotta be one of the most unflattering things designers ever came up with.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:43 PM) :

is that a pair of bernard whihelm?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:10 PM) :

Wow, i love the look, i wonder if it would look as good with a bi chromatic approach, you know, white or black sneakers, white shirt, black sweater and black/grey shorts with checks or lines? Like a formal suit but totally insane, maybe throw a skinny tie in there to make it more punk rock...

Anonymous guy who said ... (4:25 PM) :

this is the best on the sartorialist and didn't expect it to drop from the end of the world, i changed my mind now!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:41 PM) :

Yeah Joel!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:48 AM) :

To Anonymous who wanted critics to 'think outside the box'... perhaps comments were directed less at the model's outfit than to the Sartorialist's choice of words. Describing this look as 'refined' is just laughable, and throws out of the window the accepted meaning of 'refined' (characterised by polish, elegance and subtlety). Clearly, a new vocab is needed., or at the very least, more precision with language.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:42 PM) :

i think this is brilliant. there's something about his decidedly cavalier physical stance and purposely disheveled clothing that i think automatically brings him right back to chic. besides, someone who didn't care about his look wouldn't be sporting such killer eyewear. bravo, brother!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:04 PM) :

I wanna give him a good aussie go!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:04 AM) :

So artschool. Im over this already.

Blogger Sydney Sider said ... (11:43 PM) :

i love how the relaxed sydney attitude comes across in his style!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:47 PM) :

i like the harem pants... so grunge, so nineties.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:51 AM) :

Love those shorts. Looks a lot like danish born, London based, Henrik Vibskov. They a launched again this season in new colours. See www.henrikvibskov.com

Anonymous dreamcrusher said ... (1:08 PM) :

there is something very grungy yet sexual about this image and this outfit... idk...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:37 AM) :

henrik vibskov went to st martins but is in fact copenhagen based!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:04 PM) :

I thought this was an old photo of marc jacobs for a moment.

I'm not sure that's a compliment.
