On the Street......Color Story, Sydney

I don't know what this means from a fashion perspective, but looking at the crazy confluence of colors alone is totally inspirational to me.

something of Dries Van Noten in the palette, no?

xx

Blogger Oh Dear Charlotte said ... (9:08 AM) :

i love that khaki green colour- its basically a neutral when really its quite eye popping. it looks like youre enjoying australia :)

Blogger Nina Yasemin said ... (9:11 AM) :

Totally agree! First by the way.

Blogger Michelle said ... (9:12 AM) :

Wow, what a gorgeous picture to start my day. I agree with you, totally inspiring combination of colors, particularly the rich purple and blue. This is a shot that I wouldn't have noticed if I encountered it on the street myself.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:15 AM) :

wow. this picture reminds me so much of my mother. i remember waking up on summer mornings as a kid, walking downstairs to find freshly cut peaches and strawberries with sugar, then going outside to the porch to eat my breakfast and chat with my mother who'd be doing yardwork outside - pruning plants, watering the garden, etc. what a strong woman.

Blogger Dani said ... (9:16 AM) :

Completely! We don't see color like that most of the time in New York.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:21 AM) :

Just back from Brisbane having missed the Cutler and Co Melbourne meet, but being in sinc with the Sart's travel clock and being the first to post is irresistible, from a fashion perspective I think this is know as the perfect T turned into a dress ... with som nice glass.

Blogger liana said ... (9:23 AM) :

the colourful markets :)
love it.

Anonymous muna said ... (9:26 AM) :

fashion means inspirational..and inspirational means fashion

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:35 AM) :

i like that you used the word 'confluence' again.

Blogger Pattern and Perspective said ... (9:35 AM) :

This lady looks comfortable & so incredibly happy. It is a great shot, and I think I want to travel into the photo and live in the moment. Cheery & bright, well done.

Blogger Roxanne said ... (9:37 AM) :

Definitely a Dries palette to me. :)

Anonymous Laura said ... (9:41 AM) :

Great colours, including the brights (tents, dress, red t-shirt and tablecloth) and the more subtle (the sky, the bag and her hair). I love her shape and the unlaced plimsolls, too. Very relaxed. I thought Australia was cold just now - doesn't look like it here.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:45 AM) :

She looks like a low budget Peter-Pan, but the colors and fashion make this look like it was taken in 1963 and published in a high end magazine of the time. You went into a time warp.

Blogger Ashley Brooke said ... (9:48 AM) :

This look defines effortless style. It's all in the details - the hair, the shoes, the stance - this girl looks comfortable in her skin and fabulous in her comfort. And that hair is so 2009.

Anonymous Diana said ... (9:48 AM) :

You don't have to go to India to find such bright and brilliant colors.

And she looks so handsome & healthy, and vibrant down to earth at the same time!

Blogger V said ... (10:01 AM) :

laceless keds = yes.

Anonymous suzanne nelson said ... (10:12 AM) :

i love coloured glass and how it changes with light and liquid.
i just wish i could have a suntan that shade instead of being super blonde with skin the colour of uncooked pastry...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:14 AM) :

Love this photo. It's a feeling, a mood, and those inspire me.

Also, for those confused about the weather Down Under. Don't worry, we were too! Autumn is schizophrenic here - cold & rainy and warm & sunny, often in the same day. Last Saturday (market day in Paddington) was sunny and beautiful after a couple of chilly days.

Blogger mybeautyaffair said ... (10:16 AM) :

did not realise that color something like green khaiki more eye-cathing to me. Used to think that color is dull one.
Now you have convinved me with this beautiful photo.
Loving it much. :))

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:19 AM) :

Paddington markets?

Blogger G. said ... (10:20 AM) :

and the shoes... ;)

Blogger LivingGolden said ... (10:23 AM) :

She makes me want to hit the gym for legs like that. It looks so warm there. I'm so jealous.

Anonymous kmcm said ... (10:24 AM) :

The saturated colors on your Australia trip are Sirk-crazy. Love 'em!

Blogger Pronto. Calcei said ... (10:27 AM) :

i like it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:27 AM) :

The coloring that the sunlight provides for all these Australia shots is incredible. Its interesting to see the differences in each country or city. That amazing warm yellow glow is fantastic.

Blogger Ammu said ... (10:36 AM) :

Gorgeous pic - I especially love the insouciance of her shoes paired with that silk t-shirt dress. So easy and...perfect. And she's smiling!

Blogger Shoestring Traveler said ... (10:46 AM) :

Love the colors--what a great photo composition!

Blogger stephced said ... (11:08 AM) :

OH MY GOD i am obsessed, Sart. You have juxatposed her so nicely against the colorful still life. This is so pleasing to my eye

Blogger j'taimee said ... (11:21 AM) :

She sort of looks like a modern Maid Marion. I like it.

Anonymous greendress said ... (11:29 AM) :

This is a fantastic color story - black bra straps and all. She looks comfortable, stylish and happy. Perfect!

Blogger miss sophie said ... (11:29 AM) :

love the colors - she looks so chic and comfy in that silk(?) tee-shirt dress.

Blogger norawoah said ... (11:29 AM) :

oh-she's fantastic- her outfit is wonderful and so perfect for her.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:36 AM) :

LOVE the colors! Thanks for another inspirational picture :)

Blogger junglesiren said ... (11:39 AM) :

First of all, yeah, it's a gorgeous shot. The colors are fantastic but what gets me is this lady's vibrant, healthy, look.

She is the best of Australia IMO. I've spent time there and found the women to be so sporty and healthy -- even the ones who smoked! That's what really excited me, outdoorsy, athletic adventure geek -- with style -- that I am.

Here is a great example of someone who "could wear a potato sack and look good".... This stunning woman elevates a potato sack into something really nice.

Also, her smile, her strong posture, the way the sun lights her face -- it calls to mind those lifestyle shots in Life magazine back in the 60's. Like "out and about with Olympic tennis champ Stretchina McStilts".

But most of all.... I want to challenge her in a kayak race....

Blogger Barbara said ... (11:47 AM) :

hair hair hair! She has great legs.

Blogger Tocqueville From The Heights said ... (11:51 AM) :

great light - great colors

I have that bag - wonder what's in hers? Mine is currently empty - waiting for a trip to the beach.

Blogger ... said ... (12:01 PM) :

Wow ...

You have captured so much of the beauty and colourful/healthy style that Sydney citizens have. Very refreshing photographs!

Blogger Paloma V. said ... (12:06 PM) :

Well... this is the image I have of Australia in my head. Earth colours, happy and relax people, a powerful sun and a beautiful sky...
I'm loving this picture.

Kisses from Peru.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:06 PM) :

Wow, this is absolutely fabulous. It makes me happy. Its so vibrant. Love the woman on the picture she looks like she loves her life.

Blogger BlumeBloom said ... (12:26 PM) :

This picture just looks like fun! A fun place to be, beautiful weather and a fun person to be around!
Great shot!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:37 PM) :

I just love how happy and healthy looking she is. Carefree vibe, and yes, great colors. What a babe

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:38 PM) :

so fabulous it hurts.

Anonymous Leah said ... (12:43 PM) :

I can't believe that anyone thinks this is fashion. She looks like she just rolled out of bed to swing by the market. Personal "style" maybe but fashion, NO!

You need to get back to Paris.

Blogger Bookworm said ... (12:45 PM) :

Inspiring! I agree with Anon. above--who cares about the slightly odd outfit--she just looks so happy, tan, and healthy.

Blogger hc said ... (12:59 PM) :

ahh such ease, simplicity defined.

Blogger PubMaven said ... (1:35 PM) :

This looks like the Bondi flea market, or is it Paddington? I found Sydney to be one of the most fashionable cities I've traveled to, including Paris, London, NYC, Milan. The Bondi market, if you get a chance, has amazing clothes from local designers. It's really incredible.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:41 PM) :

I love her legs! she is one who does have legs like they should be. Not of the skinny sticks but still thin/sporty. She rocks the dress, which is kinda hard when it is that simple! It could look sloppy at someone else.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:00 PM) :

Am I the only one who doesn't like this? Sure I do find it interesting to see what things & images inspire you and for that the photo has merit. Beyond that I only see a girl in a big shirt in front of colourful objects. As a window to the mind of the photographer: in context, priceless. As a photo: I'm not lov'n it.

Blogger Olimpia Liberti said ... (2:13 PM) :

My mom have the same bag!!

Blogger Thais said ... (2:32 PM) :

Wow, beautiful photo! the colours are just amazing! xoxo http://fashionforafashionista.blogspot.com/ you are an amazing photographer!

Blogger kale daikon said ... (2:40 PM) :

From all perspectives, fashion and otherwise, this is how sunshine leisure should look and feel. The no-lace tennies add a fun shot of energy. I can't wait for summer!

Anonymous Vanessa said ... (3:03 PM) :

I love it! The ease of her outfit, the relaxed vibe of the market. Really lovely.

Blogger Mariona said ... (3:09 PM) :

love the colors love the life !!!

Anonymous An Australian said ... (3:25 PM) :

Oh bless.
Clearly you're clutching at straws on this assignment.

Australia has a many offerings however fashion isn't one of them. It just don't cut the cloth.

I'm sure a lot of folk who have never lived abroad would disagree with me.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:27 PM) :

WHAT THE HECK IS SHE WEARING??!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:33 PM) :

Lots of Redheads in Australia, yeah?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:35 PM) :

Well, she is a kind of fresh air goddess, isn't she?

The use of "totally"is overdone (like "amazing." "Inspirational" is fine all by itself. Leave "totally" to teenage girls.

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (3:55 PM) :

Really cool! Great!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:07 PM) :

well from a 'fashion perspective' this is cool, understated, natural, and REAL. she exudes style, embodies style.... this is just a prime example of how a truly fashionable, stylish person isn't put together by their choice in shoes or bags or garments, it is something that radiates from within. and this girl has it!

Anonymous Hannah said ... (4:22 PM) :

I love it! She looks so comfortable and happy, so you want not just the look but the feeling behind it. The color is perfect for her!

Blogger NVA said ... (4:40 PM) :

the colour remind me of bollywood movies

Anonymous Smilla said ... (4:47 PM) :

The colours and that natural light, too, which is so different for painting in Australia. Looks like Paddington Markets to me - this image captures the feel of a Sydney urban weekend as summer just keeps on going.

Glad you are focussing on real people and not the artificial Sydney princesses.

Blogger Cassiopeia said ... (4:52 PM) :

gorgeous... i love all the colour combos going on behind. and the light is amazing!

Blogger Honeygo Beasley said ... (4:56 PM) :

It's a beach cover up and a new take on beach shoes versus the old flip flop. Simple string bikini top strings showing ...

Cute short red hair.

No shoe laces.

Easy going.

Fall colored summer with the teal glass and the rich wine color. Let's have a spritzer!

Anonymous owen said ... (5:09 PM) :

simply put, it's inspiration :D

Anonymous princess glee said ... (5:17 PM) :

Could be almost anywhere on earth. Still, I find I like the picture "fashion-wise." She's got a big, comfy tee in a very complimentary color for her that fits nicely and goes well with her unlaced sneaks that are equally complimentary. Her excellently cut red hair and polished red nails, fit legs and smile would look spectacular almost anywhere on earth as well.

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (5:22 PM) :

Ah, this lady was just in the right place at the right moment.

Blogger Stephanie Clayton said ... (5:36 PM) :

So pretty and natural! As one other poster said, the colors seem very Dries Van Noten.
That intense Sydney autumn light is making all your photos glow!
I love all these Aussie images, can't wait to see more!

Blogger Nivea Nioiga said ... (5:40 PM) :

It´s so beautiful.I love the colors!

Great picture as always!

blue, purple and green
beutiful!!

When are you leaving Australia?

Blogger Soren Lorensen said ... (6:37 PM) :

she looks like a wood nymph who has put on some sneakers so as to join us mere mrotals for a day.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:40 PM) :

Photography is the winner.

Blogger Relaunched said ... (6:45 PM) :

Salut Monsieur,

oh i absolutly KNOW what you mean. When i wrote last day about a wonderful bag, i saw the same and talked in my post about colour contrasts.

The first time when i felt this could be a trend, it was while watching at your blog.
I think this stuff will be the next hype in the fashion industry. Playing with red/blue, green/violett, yellow/brown and so on.

Life is back.
Life goes on.
Life is strong.
Life is wonderful.
Life is colourful...

Merci et à demain, j`espère.

Now THAT is a picture from the home town I love and feel in my bones! Style of place exists in the way people interact with their environment, and this photo captures the style essence of Sydney beautifully. Congrats on finding it and capturing it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:06 PM) :

I don't think of this as a "fashion" blog per se. There are plenty of those around and many of them read like shopping lists, which is fine (hey, I like perving on Paris fashion week as much as the next person!) but not necessarily what I look for when I come here. Style transcends fashion. I see people who are fashionably dressed all the time who don't have much actual style. And I see people who seem oblivious to trends and fashion who have immense personal style. This lady, in my opinion, has style. Oh and I'm digging the light in these photos too, everything seems to GLOW.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:16 PM) :

I never realised how much our colours and lights differ here in the Southern Hempisphere. But having compared the photos taken in Europe and here... wow! Everything's much shinier and brighter.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:22 PM) :

THIS is what Australia is all about.

Blogger C & S said ... (11:07 PM) :

Love the casual, laid-back chic. She's just glowing. We've recently started our own fashion blog, Golden Gate Style. It can't compare to yours, Sartorialist, but give it a try:

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:45 AM) :

Hey Sart,
First time blogger! Love this pic, so much confidence in her and your shot. The dress is so simple and her shoes fit so well, makes me happy to see this pic. Thanks.

Ange from Melbourne, wished I met you on Sunday.

Anonymous Lulu said ... (1:54 AM) :

Lovely...makes me happy(^0^)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:01 AM) :

this feels very 1983 or 86. The unlaced Keds and the tee shirt dress especially the hair, so completely Simply Red a la 1986. Especially the red fingernails.
(google search images)

it's not bad, it's more nostalgic. reminds me of summer between school years in San Diego, California.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:04 AM) :

i think this story is about style, not about fashion. sometimes and some places are not concerned as widely and deeply engrossed in fashion. Sydney seems like less of a peacocking place and more of this - smiles, comfort, sincerity and good weather. seems like.

Anonymous JESSIE TSO said ... (2:28 AM) :

everytime i visit your blog i truly hope that i dun live in HK but some other foreign countries which are full of colors, energy and creativity. thanks for sharing, it's inspirational as u said

I'm so disappointed. I love your blog but you post this and only two measly images from Melbourne (the fashion capital of Oz)??? What's going on? I've lived in both cities and know there so much to be inspired by in each but you wouldn't know through your eyes.

Blogger miszmilk said ... (12:43 PM) :

The colours are wonderful. Love the shoes with the dress but oh-the-dress. I believe clothes should fit right, even if they are meant to be laid back and relaxed. If it was tapered at the waist just a little bit more...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:57 PM) :

Off Topic... There's something about the way the sun hits the subject in each photo, makes the sky a perfect hue of blue with a whisper of a cloud...I just might have to visit!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:26 PM) :

sorry to disagree, but that is not a crazy confluence of color ... that is life and it is beautiful!

thanks for all the wonderful inspiration shown through your efforts and photos and the personal style shared by the people in your photos.

the kind of thing I tack to my inspiration board over my workspace.. Thanks!!

p.s. I looked for you in Florence this past week! Saw so many stylish Florentines and took so many mental pictures (plus a few sneaky actual ones)

Blogger Anastasia said ... (6:24 PM) :

i love this photo - relaxed Sydney!
this look represents the city I know and love... a timless look, unique in that its not 'high-end' designer - she looks comfortable, content and that smile! amazing!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:53 PM) :

As a former New Yorker now living in Sydney; It IS difficult to find fashion related inspiration here. It's either "tarty" and unwearable (Sass and Bide), or So entirely trend driven that it's out of style before the model leaves the catwalk. I wish I saw more women here like the one in this photo. She looks effortlessly chic and completely devoid of all the extraneous "bells, whistles, and sequins" that are so over-wrought in this city. Now Melbourne is a different story.....

Blogger Tea Lady said ... (7:33 PM) :

the sun is brighter in australia. it really is.

this photo has australia written all over it. the light. the relaxed happy smile on this woman's face. her athletic figure.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:29 PM) :

The colors really are something special. She doesn't really stand out, which is not an insult. Each major element is necessary for the picture to work. The vases, the girl, the table cloth, the tents... It's all necessary and all so engaging to the eye.

P.S.

Those shoes are sweet.

Blogger Boo Green said ... (4:27 AM) :

Wow, I haven't missed home so much before! This image encapsulates Australia, from the weave of the bag to the coloured glass vases. So fresh.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:37 AM) :

With reference to Leah's comment, for me, personal style is much more important than fashion. It's also much more difficult to achieve, but this woman definitely has it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:01 AM) :
