On the Street.... Except for the Cellphone..., Milan

...this looks like it could be Rome circa 1963

Comments on "On the Street.... Except for the Cellphone..., Milan"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:50 AM) :

Yes, especially the guy to the right feels very 1963. Quite Beatles-esque actually. The glasses, the "moptop" the turtleneck and the tight jacket make the look.

Blogger DeepSix said ... (9:02 AM) :

yawn...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:02 AM) :

love the glasses

Blogger Mark P-H said ... (9:06 AM) :

i'm imagining that it's a new-fangled electric razor in the guy's hand, and the other guy's pocket as well i think so that it can be 1963 in this picture... i have to believe this because i will never be brave or cool enough to wear those lapels, etc. Holy crap the dude left-center looks GREAT.

I wish I could see the details of his hat in his left hand.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:10 AM) :

They look too feminine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:10 AM) :

i love this look!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i want to be like them!jejeje

Blogger Carlos Gonzalez said ... (9:16 AM) :

Love the way those oversized wayfarers complement their outfits.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:16 AM) :

Love this photo! It speaks volumes. The gentleman facing the camera looks so, so cool, he is immaculately dressed. He could only be Italian.
[Hope this photo doesn't prompt a barrage of boring anti-cigarette comments. i don't smoke, i don't like smoking but i defend peoples' right to give themselves bad breath and hideous diseases if they want to.]

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:24 AM) :

I LOVE this outfit. I wear things like this on a daily bases, all I need is to start smoking! Haha.

Great job! :D

Blogger stacy said ... (9:30 AM) :

fabulous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:50 AM) :

How charming!

Blogger Dan in Richmond said ... (9:51 AM) :

Except for the cellphone is right, otherwise he looks great. Everything here suits his look and his attitude very well. If only he'd known...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:55 AM) :

Wow, everything old IS new again. Two questions - Is the murse "in", or is he holding for a lady friend?
And isn't the purpose of slimmer and smaller electronic devices avoidance of that unsightly pocket distortion?
-Capt. Mike

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 AM) :

Wow, I love that look on guys! The Sunglasses and the suit makes them look so classy and gentlemen like. Really nice!

Blogger Petulia said ... (10:04 AM) :

Perfect! Absolutely impeccable.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:11 AM) :

is that a ribbon tie?! perfect.

Blogger Dominica said ... (10:14 AM) :

The boys watch the girls while the girls watch the boys who watch the girls go by
Eye to eye, they solemnly convene to make the scene
Which is the name of the game, watch a guy watch a dame on any street in town
Up and down and over and across, romance is boss

Guys talk "girl talk", it happens everywhere
Eyes watch girls walk with tender lovin' care

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:17 AM) :

I adore Italian guys and their style and this just confirms it. One word: Lovely

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:18 AM) :

I love Italian men after my last visit to Milan, but this picture made me love them even more!
I like the way he holds his cigarette and his hair.
I also like the glasses and the turtleneck of the guy in the front.

Viva Italia...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:19 AM) :

I forgot the tell that I love the way he purchess his lips.
Nice detail...

Blogger TMFA said ... (10:21 AM) :

make it black and white and it IS Rome 1963.

I like it. :)

Blogger Karmander said ... (10:40 AM) :

Crisp and sexy! In any time period, this would be a stunning ensemble, but for the new millenium, I think this faux beatnick reinvention is perfect. I can not get over those gold bracelets.

Blogger VanessasRunway said ... (10:41 AM) :

I love it, it looks right out of a movie!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

Man has clutch bag?
lovely

Blogger Matthew Mikulice said ... (10:54 AM) :

Super cool!

Blogger Mo said ... (11:05 AM) :

Yes, upon seeing this, I was about to say "this is totally Mod~"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:07 AM) :

I think they look more Diana Ross than Beatle.

Blogger Sara said ... (11:13 AM) :

How fantastic, i love this picture, you can see that a moment was captured, but most of all i love their shades.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

Besides their amzin choose of clothes and glasses, also take a look of hòw he smokes and how he shows his attitude by bodylanguage.
Left guys haircut inspires me

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:16 AM) :

Also very chic to see these stylish Milanese guys together.

Blogger Ivy Lane said ... (11:17 AM) :

I wonder where they are going for lunch!

Blogger Hadley Makes said ... (11:23 AM) :

The pale blue slacks are wonderful!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:40 AM) :

They look incredibly affected and self-conscious. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm just pointing it out. I would also say that this kind of affectation is more culturally acceptable in Europe. North Americans have more of a taste for the "natural".

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:47 AM) :

It's funny how most of people still have a positive and admired vision of italian men and sense of fashion. Thank you all, but, really, I'm italian and here there's a spread lack of style, originality and elegance. We are really boring about fashion than most of other countries (in and out Europe).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:49 AM) :

Amazing. Very cool. Bravo!

Blogger Relaunched said ... (11:54 AM) :

Salut,

absolutly, Mr. Schuman! Roma or some other italian city.... Remember the film "The talented Mr. Ripley"? Hearing the sound of the song "Tu vou fa l`americano". Great! Looking like a Dandy...... Thats me! Hello! Thats me!!! ;-)

Blogger fernandomachine said ... (12:22 PM) :

Blogger sophia said ... (12:23 PM) :

Like this lots I love the trim on the man that is facing the cameras jacket.

Blogger John B Pritchett said ... (12:25 PM) :

I can only agree with Suzanne Nelson's comments near the top of the responses. They both olok great!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:32 PM) :

Blue? They look like a crisp white. Cool to be square.

Blogger Candace said ... (1:02 PM) :

black velvet blazer...amazing!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:21 PM) :

I've always wished I had the supreme confidence to pull off a look like this---not necessarily this look (although I do love it) but something like this that takes some boldness.

Blogger TEXTSTYLES said ... (1:55 PM) :

i adore this photo

Blogger Amy Williams said ... (3:29 PM) :

This is amazing, the guy on the left is so great.
Love it, awesome photo.

Blogger Nick Rossi said ... (3:32 PM) :

Great shot Sart...and a very apt comment to boot. I love seeing shots like this that are very timeless. Could be 1963, definitely is this century. That said, the fellow on the left is sporting a hairstyle that is VERY much early 1960s Italian/French/Continental - the rock & rollers in "La Dolce Vita" come to mind. Nice.

Blogger J. said ... (3:38 PM) :

I love the jacket the man on the left is wearing, and his white trousers are lovely too! I also want his sunglasses...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:40 PM) :

Love this portrait-- all those great sunglasses... Such a modern take on the La Dolce Vita sensibility.

Blogger Brigadeiro said ... (3:46 PM) :

Too cool for school :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:31 PM) :

wonder what their shoes look like

Blogger Jordan Bramlett said ... (4:52 PM) :

Sure it does... when smoking wasn't so déclassé.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:46 PM) :

First: To everybody who said, 'yawn:' could you possibly be any more disrespectful? Despite the fact that the technological era seems to have recast all art (blogs being an obvious and decidedly post-post-modern example, as public property) it is still art. Therefore, show a little respect when you're commenting on somebody's work, for crying out loud.

Second: I don't think this look is boring at all. It's classy, it's classic, and it's well-played. You can't go wrong with clean, cool, and collected.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:06 PM) :

This is one of the RARE times I like what your men are wearing. Being from rural Iowa and now in DC it's one of the fews looks I brought with me.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:29 PM) :

absolutely stunning.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:39 PM) :

i love his pose

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:42 PM) :

what a great picture! the guys just give off a "cool" vibe.

Blogger StyleFitz said ... (6:53 PM) :

These guys look so cool, I'd love to dress like this everyday.

Not sure though, should white trousers be only worn in summer / spring.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:00 PM) :

...step back in time...I love it...retro is always the best...

Blogger Eff Dee Aytche said ... (7:41 PM) :

i love it

Blogger Jay_ said ... (7:42 PM) :

Wow, those guys look very cool, Nice pic.

Blogger dwashington314@gmail.com said ... (7:45 PM) :

I hate to be so pc but all I could see was the ciggy.

well, that and a totally affected "look".

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:48 PM) :

That guy looks like a young Patrick Dempsey. Yum.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:04 PM) :

Yeah, 'stylish,' but way too femme.

I can't begin to imagine how many times the word "fabulous" or "fierce" came up in this conversation. They should be a judging panel on some sort of fashion reality show.

Blogger Raul Villalobos said ... (8:24 PM) :

Love the glasses on both of the men closer to the camera. Very chic. love the look of the jacket, but no so much the actual jacket. While I'm not a fan of white pants.... the look pulls together for these two. Could do without the ultra-feminine hand gestures (I've never thought that looks sophisticated but just rather feminine).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:30 PM) :

this blog is inspiring!!!

Blogger Sunny said ... (8:47 PM) :

reminds me of that Will Ferrel skit on SNL with the mini cell phones you can barely see."Meet you in Milan in an hour!"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:15 PM) :

love, love the sunglasses on all three of them! also can't ignore the jacket/ white trousers combination on the left, it is excellent!

Blogger Kati said ... (9:22 PM) :

It looks like a Fellini movie. Very cool! The cell phone could be erased from the photo, but he has such a cool way of holding the phone and cigarette in the same hand!

Blogger rfc said ... (9:28 PM) :

What make are the black sunglasses? where can i get them ?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:01 PM) :

They're acting out a Rufus Wainright song.

Blogger seawallrunner said ... (10:53 PM) :

I love the look of these three young men. so natural, so classy, so together.

But what I love more, is your ability to catch people being themselves. Not posed, not pretending - these images are the reason why I've been returning to your blog for well over a year.

thank you for inspiring me and delighting me

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:17 PM) :

I thought you meant they were like a mirror reflection of each other, except for the cellphone, until I scrolled down. I think it still applies tho.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:24 PM) :

LOVE it, i like the femininity, the slim silhouettes, and the hair :P it helps that the man facing is so handsome

oh and the sunglasses are the prada version of the wayfarer...

Blogger ~*gen said ... (12:02 AM) :

Love the way they're carrying themselves... and great sunglasses!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:13 AM) :

If they are Italian they wouldn't say fabulous or fierce.

Blogger THE DAY AFTER YOU DIE said ... (1:37 AM) :

this is how i dress right now, however after seeing this pic i think im gonna stop or change it up.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:11 AM) :

This is not new. Or innovative. It maintains some kind of ready wear ready to sleep aesthetic.

Blogger Move said ... (3:08 AM) :

i love it except the cell phone

Blogger Chris Brown said ... (5:14 AM) :

too girlie to be 1963

Blogger Stephanie Clayton said ... (5:44 AM) :

Beautiful photo, beautiful men. They seem cool & aloof, almost unapproachable- which makes them somehow very appealing.

Blogger peter robinson said ... (6:48 AM) :

Marcello Mastroianni was asked by an interviewer, "What is 'la dolce vita'?" He replied "To eat, to work, to smoke."
Nonsmokers(and I have been one for life) do not 'get' what a pleasure this is.

Great shot, makes me look and look!

But what shoes to wear, hmmmmm?

Btw, It's not the guy on the left holding the LV bag, its the woman behind him, his hand and the bag line up perectly creating the illusion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:58 AM) :

Great silhouettes, but a bit too precious in the details. I would remove the ribbon tie, open the jacket, and muss the hair a bit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:13 PM) :

The gold bracelets look perfect... along with everything else.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:07 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:11 PM) :

I love all of your photos from Italy the best, particularly that of the men. The way that they dress is just as powerful as the French woman in Chanel or what Ralph Lauren romanticizes as being quintessentially American. They give men a style and an authority that is otherwise lacking, as if fashion is an art for BOTH sexes to participate in; they illustrate that there ARE options for men other than J. Crew, what most Americans perceive to be the higher evolved man from T-shirt and football jersey. I implore you to take as many photographs of Italian MEN as you can - perhaps even start a side blog, even seasonal, dedicated to Italian men only. May I propose The Sartorialist Italia?

Blogger erin c said ... (10:05 AM) :

This look works well, though I can't help but agree with previous comments that this look is slightly effeminate.

Though it could be argued that it isn't so much the gaping lapels and ostentatious bow that is dare-I-say effeminate, yet his posture.

Thoughts?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:32 PM) :

The Murse is completely acceptable for men of gay or straight orientation in Italy. I love this photo, it remind me of Marcello Mastroianni. Why don't you ever shoot in Rome? I would love to see the young style of Rome up here. It's fantastic!
