Oh, how they make me smile!! They both ooze NYC, especially the right one. Plus, they are the living proof: brown is the better black.

Blogger Fredde Ahlstrom Cooney said ... (8:03 AM) :

Enlarging works lovely!

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (8:03 AM) :

They look great and happy! Love it!

Blogger MARIA H said ... (8:09 AM) :

The image does it for me.
The visual elements (color, composition, light, mood) are working together. Nice.
I like both of these two women style. I do one when feeling girly and the other one when feeling boyish.

Blogger color lili said ... (8:25 AM) :

The boots are great ! My favorite boots comes from Argentina. I never found a best quality leather !

Blogger Carlene said ... (8:35 AM) :

I love both of 'em, and every single thing they're wearing or carrying. Great photo!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:40 AM) :

Perfect colours for the fall, each element of their outfits is works well and I love their friendly atitude! The girl in the right looks so Spanish.

I am pretty sure the boots are from Zara(F/W 05). I bought an exact pair two years ago!

And even if mine are more worn out than her's, I just can't get rid of them! They are so confortable!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:46 AM) :

The coat on the right, in fact the overall shapes, are like an oversized version of '70s silhouettes, interesting. & love the coat on the left, sublime simplicity.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:51 AM) :

The woman on the right completely overshadows her friend on the left. She looks awesome. That coat is just beautiful, I particularly like how massive it without being sloppy. And of course those boots, women in nice flat, almost manly boots-whew!!

Blogger pig_93 said ... (8:53 AM) :

i love the hat.

Blogger Paul Pincus said ... (8:56 AM) :

Sisters?

I like everything the lady on the right is wearing, especially that coat!

Cheers.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:57 AM) :

oh my the colors, the shot perfect!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:00 AM) :

They are lovely. They look pulled together, but relaxed and comfortable. Their positioning is interesting, too. The woman on the right is eclipsing the one on the right. I wonder what their relationship is.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:06 AM) :

Fabulous. The girls, the clothes, the photo. You're single-handedly saving fashion from itself.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (9:12 AM) :

they are very fun friends - I know both of them and this shot is just one of those fun spontaneous moments

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (9:12 AM) :

Oh wow - great photo! They're beautiful. All those browns, the textures - stunning. It's like Winter fashion on a large scale. Not large as in size, rather large or bold, or grand, in proportions and it all works beautifully.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:15 AM) :

Yes, I agree the girl on the right is outstanding. The coat is very special.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:23 AM) :

i am pretty sure the boots on the right are Frye low campus boots. I have had a pair for five years now and they are finally perfect-a great investment.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:39 AM) :

girl on the right: she looks amazing but i think that purse with those boots don't work well together. really really good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:19 AM) :

The woman on the right has the big boots, but the one on the left is an angel.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:20 AM) :

I think this is the perfect expression for both of them on keeping your sense of style while keeping your sense of reality on how cold New York days can be. The city often presents a challenge on how to keep your imagination going on such dramatic weather changes that we have been going through lately...Bravo to them!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 AM) :

What a delightful photo! Not to get too soppy, but it makes the argument that the best accessory is a dear friend who makes you smile!

I'm totally coveting the coat on the right. The fabric is most excellent. And I love these new fuller volume coats --they're so much more cozy and practical than something super- fitted. They can also give one some real "presence" --as is the case here.

Blogger Landis said ... (10:47 AM) :

classic new york.

Blogger wear palettes said ... (10:58 AM) :

one of the greatest colour combinations.

Blogger stacy said ... (11:18 AM) :

Living in Canada myself, I truly appreciate these outdoor winter shots. I'm always looking for stylish yet warm inspiration.

Layers, layers, layers.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:20 AM) :

we're all just so happy to finally be able to bust out our stylish winter wear aren't we? i like how the brown bag looks like it could be hanging off a hook inside the coat sleeve. or maybe like that big sleeve is actually a fashion vacuum cleaner that scoops up cool things from off the street, or from the occasional store display. :)

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:31 AM) :

what really makes this work for me is the orange hat. No hat or a more bland colour would so reduce the impact. So my lesson for the day is "contrasting chapeau"...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:38 AM) :

Hmm. I'm not an expert on "proportions," so let me ask the follwoing: is the bag the best size that it could be? Naturally, the answer is subjective. I just feel like the bag should either be way bigger to go along with the large proportion of everything else, or do you think the bag should be petite in order to "balance" the other articles?

Ahhh, but I do love what both of the womyn have done with black and tones of brown. I work in a clothing store, and I always get these weird womyn who say that it is taboo to wear black and brown together--oh, please!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:48 AM) :

i remember the gal on the left - i think she was last pictured in a cardigan? they both look great. i love fall and winter clothing!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:49 AM) :

Lovely! The girl on the right really has the Ali McGraw vibe going for her.

Blogger The Spicers said ... (11:57 AM) :

Great looks! I LOVE the coat and layers on the right as well as the (Bottega?) bag and those great roughed-up boots.

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (1:01 PM) :

So glad the enlarging situation is resolved.

The girl on the right looks so much like Ali McGraw in Love Story -- the knitted cap, stacked boots, leggings, coat, everything.

This is so inspiring.

Blogger Allie said ... (1:39 PM) :

I must must must know where the lovely lady on the right got her coat. Whose is it??? I'm all about cozy, comfortable looks for this winter - I want to finally fuse fashion and function because I'm sick of freezing while walking down the wind tunnel that is Broadway!

Anyone? That coat!

Blogger Susan B said ... (1:43 PM) :

That coat on the right is fabulous! Lovely smiles, too.

Blogger shabnom said ... (2:24 PM) :

Yes, the enlarging works perfectly!

I covet the orange hat/dark hair combo, not to mention the huge, puffsleeve coat, and the same person's scarf... hell and the rest of it too. Her friend, however, is totally working the taupe/black combo. She even has a little black peeking out of her coat sleeve. Love it!

Blogger Alysa said ... (2:25 PM) :

Thanks for the inspiration, Sart!

Blogger ellastica said ... (3:12 PM) :

altho it's already december(!),
looking at this photo, one can almost breathe the brisk city air rustling through the trees and pick-up the scattering of fallen leaves across the sidewalk.

lovely autumnal setting and color scheme.

interesting layered, textured effect on the right. she's very Ali McGraw.

while both coats are casual and loose, i like the simplicity and rumpled look of the coat on the right. this is something i'd wear. it's not too precious. i could throw it on and go.

Blogger Suzanna Mars said ... (3:29 PM) :

Everything is right about this picture, but most especially the fondness between the two girls.

Like others, I think the coat on the right is exceptional. Also worthy of remark is the tonal differentiations of brown, a color that reflects the autumnal street scene in its own variegations.

Blogger Rumi Neely said ... (3:42 PM) :

Love the Frye boots on the right! Brown and black are really nice together when done well.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:55 PM) :

nice boots!

Blogger Natribu said ... (4:17 PM) :

Me encanta el abrigo y la boina de la chica de la derecha. Las 2 van geniales!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:00 PM) :

These two are the picture of Fall!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:18 PM) :

This may be the first time I've recognized an article of clothing here... Frye's great campus boots. Question: do you think a knit hat like that works with short hair too?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:50 PM) :

Love the Frye boots, got myself the exact same this September. Thanks for the inspiration how to wear them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:53 PM) :

This is a wonderful shot :)

They both seem so happy and have a certain NYC air/style about them...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:27 PM) :

re: tolerance to cold, I often find that if my upper half is thoroughly warm, I can tolerate pretty much anything NYC can throw at me. This includes bare legs and stepping into snowbanks in stiletto sandals!

I, too, covet her coat. Have we mentioned how beautiful her scarf is, yet? What a perfect colour!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:44 PM) :

I will go with woman on the left look, more simple and refined. the rightie is just too busy, like almost swallowed by the scarf/dress(?) and the coat? The boots are definitely to big even if it's the bikers style. Is grunge back?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:48 PM) :

Nice to see the Frye Campus boots. I just wore mine yesterday...They're just getting broken in after two years.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:28 PM) :

Could the coat be by Burberry Prorsum?

Blogger Lola said ... (7:43 PM) :

I love the booties the girl on the left is wearing. And her dress, too. I'm not sure I love the dress the girl on the right is wearing, though...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:47 PM) :

Happy, comfortable, outdoorsy looking women. The one on the right really reminds me of a young Ali MacGraw - very timeless. This look never really dies.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:54 PM) :

Magnificent photo Sart. Everything is in harmony but those horrendous boots, They are bulky and just not "it". Perhaps Ok to walk around in the deep snow or mud at the ranch, but NOT to be worn in a lovely winter day in Manhattan!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:12 PM) :

Pretty faces in the sidewalks of Manhattan... I read the girl on the right is somehow wining in popularity. I have to say that her covered up partner is so much more elegant. To begin with she is not showing of her bag like a flag, so out!
In the enlargement you can totally appreciate her aristocratic (dare to say Brazilian) smile along with her adorable lace up booties, I wish girl on the right would move her thick leg out of the way to take a full look of her.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:17 PM) :

I agree... the Ali MacGrawesk girl should be wearing something else, her boots are a little rough, to say the list.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:50 PM) :

Oh my goodness, I just bought a scarf exactly like that two weeks ago. Very thin wool, like linen, I had to get it. These girls are definitely New York, I like how they take these drapy shapes and make them kinda chic (i.e the nice Parka). Boho with money (but not in the Mary-Kate kinda way)

Blogger HARRY PALMZ said ... (11:38 PM) :

the above comment stole the comment out of my keys, except in a touch more pleasant wording. boho is lazy look, no matter the price of the garments involved. the lady on the left cuts a much more refined figure, albeit in a much quieter manner. please, please - let the tights tucked into cowgirl look go

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:40 AM) :

Great way to look.
Goes for both ladies.
Reminds me of "Jalouse" -a French monthly.
Same mood.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:07 AM) :

I'm curiously awaiting an understanding of the draped/hanging look. As of right now, I'm definitely not feeling it... it seems so heavy, sleepy almost.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:01 AM) :

i prefer the one on the left, actually. or rather, what she is wearing. it's subtle and elegant and very cool as well. the black on black is done very nicely, without looking funereal.

Blogger petaki said ... (4:29 AM) :

BELLISIME!!! GUAPISIMAS!! i LOVE THE BROWN SCARF,COAT, EVERYTHING!!! really cute !! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:15 AM) :

After having read all the comments,I totally agree, I love Karla Martinez's understatet elegance. The best is her smile!! And I love the combination of the very simple parka plus the elegant dress. I'd love to know though, where can I get such a lovely pashmina scarf?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:05 AM) :

i love the natural colored shatoosh scarf........that should keep her really warm besides looking chic!! but i thought they banned in the US! no?

Blogger Overpriced Designer Man Bag said ... (3:32 PM) :

Beautiful Bottega bag

Blogger dress to impress said ... (4:08 PM) :

big works definately!! and boots are amazing. keep on moving

Blogger UESman said ... (7:02 PM) :

They look like a classic New York pair!

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:19 AM) :

Wow, along with Mary Kate and Ashley, the woman on the right has somehow managed to make the whole boho/homeless chic look work! The proportions are awesome. Love the hat!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:31 AM) :

The lady on the right hasn't really layered anything. She probably has simple black top over black tights. But since her huge scarf covers it all it looks as if she has multi layers. Nice idea, great combination.

Personally I hate the bag, that texture in leather drives me crazy.

Nobody paid any attention to the lady on the left, but her shoes are (if I'm not mistaken) YSL oxford shoes. Nice posture. They're both very schick bohemians. Love it.

Blogger kalindoscopy said ... (2:10 AM) :

right has understood contemporary human concerns& left understands right. Right's coat is like armour. Bag slung, hand hidden. The coat reminds me of rusted iron. The visor/snood/hat is an excellent colour. Her scarf forms interesting shapes like a soft blouse. "Knight protects damsel". Right's hand hugs left's shoulder and left's feet are obscured by right's large imposing boot. Left's smile and left's fur and left's beautiful byzantine beads. Essentially autumnal.

Blogger zohara said ... (10:05 PM) :

THAT COAT! that must have been one in a million, i doubt i'd ever find anything similar to that. with regards to the boots, my initial thought was Frye Campus, then La Redoute, then hand made from an old Italian cobbler!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:19 PM) :

The coat in the picture is BCBG Max azria. It sells for $800, but, luckily I have it brand new w/tags listed on ebay for a starting bid of $290.00. In search type in BCBG Max azria black coffee wool coat size S or go to advanced search and look for seller cally_co58 and you'll find it just in time for Christmas
