January GQ

Some of you misunderstood me earlier (I'm sure it was my fault) but this is the gentleman named Milwaukee.

I really like this as a photo and it will be included in my exhibit coming next month at Danziger Projects.

I will discuss a little more about the exhibit soon but I will announce that there will be an opening night party the evening of January 22nd and you are all invited!

I do very much like his look.

Blogger michael said ... (10:01 AM) :

NOT ryan adams?

Blogger Laguna Beach Fogey said ... (10:02 AM) :

Awesome photo, Sart! This guy has a sharp look that could have come right out of the late 1970s New Wave and punk scene in New York. Someone hanging around CBGB, perhaps. Or a member of Blondie. I have a particular liking for his suede (?) ankle boots. But I don't understand why he is called 'Milwaukee.' He looks like a Kalamazoo to me.

Blogger Jessica Ferri said ... (10:03 AM) :

will he marry me?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 AM) :

Why do a lot of the subjects you photographed have a cigarette as an accessory? It's as if we're still stuck in the 1960's consciousness, buying in to the tobacco industry's campaign of equating smoking with being cool. Haven't we caught on to their tactics by now?

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (10:08 AM) :

I like Milwaukee! Nice combination of 50s rock'n'roll and preppy style.

Sart, have you ever considered publishing a book with your best pictures and texts? So that the next generations could see how people in the early XXIst century dressed.

Anyway, it'd be the kind of thing I would buy for a great Christmas present. Isn't Taschen interested in your work?

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:16 AM) :

clean, efficient, nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:18 AM) :

really like the shot, nice setting, nice look, kinda classic britpop kinda mod.
but those shoes... they just look too clumsy on this outfit and i do not dig this probably intended contrast.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:38 AM) :

Is Milwaukee a Mod? That style looks so crisp, even forty years after the fact.

Blogger emergency room said ... (10:47 AM) :

there's nothing better than seeing a man in a suit. no matter what, a suit always seems so polished. love his dark hair and pale skin. he gives off that vibe where he's a business man at day and rocker and night. or perhaps he just likes to dress that way. either way, he's absolutely lovely!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:51 AM) :

I am overwhelmed by how drawn I am to his look. Maybe it's the way he's leaning forward or the contrast of his skin and his suit, but I think I'm in love.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:51 AM) :

Like the look but like the notion of an exhibit much more. The site...

http://www.danzigerprojects.com/

...does not yet have you listed, Sart!

Blogger Paul Pincus said ... (11:02 AM) :

The highly sought James Danziger endorsement! A legend in the world of photography!! Congratulations on your upcoming show!!!

Cool shot.

Cheers.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (11:10 AM) :

I am listed in the Artist section of the Danziger Projects website

thanks Paul!

his endorsement means a lot to me

and the show is going to be really great

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:15 AM) :

I love that Milwaukee (the man) looks so cool and hip. If you ever get the chance to visit Milwaukee (the city), you can find young, hip people living on the east side, in Riverwest, in the third ward, the fifth ward and various spots all over the metro area. Milwaukee (the City) is a great place to visit, especially in the summer during Summerfest, the week long music festival on the lakefront. I think Milwaukee (the man) is a great representation of Milwaukee (the City).

Blogger LYNN and HORST said ... (11:26 AM) :

dream boy

Blogger Nisa Risa Perisacooper said ... (11:29 AM) :

I wish I could attend the exhibit.I am sure it will be fabulous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:32 AM) :

Ha, I like deb's comment. And I LOVE this photo! That's so generous Sart to invite all your readers to the party! I wish I were in New York City.

Cheers!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:35 AM) :

why is it that some men are so good at brooding?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:49 AM) :

I love this look, Sart but I think he's stealing the look from Ryan Adams.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:51 AM) :

skin a milky silk

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:51 AM) :

Is he the misterious boy with smoke on his face on that cool picture?
Best wishes on the show and congrats.

Blogger Emily Knight said ... (11:55 AM) :

He has skin that could make you cry it's so perfect, and yet he smokes! Sign of a real rock star *rollseyes*

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 PM) :

jonathannnnnnn
he's really as cool as this picture makes him look

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:27 PM) :

That's the coolest name ever (is from Milwaukee).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:30 PM) :

So Bob Dylan-esque. I love this!

Blogger wear palettes said ... (12:37 PM) :

the purple shirt it's quite nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:04 PM) :

Kalamazoo?
What?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:06 PM) :

i agree with the dylan comment. if dylan had burst onto the scene today instead of nearly fifty years ago, this would the modern day equivalent of his 60s look.

i love his hands in this shot, too.

Blogger ChicTooChic said ... (1:29 PM) :

perfect... i love this "cool" actitud
...me encanta
(es un modelo a seguir)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:32 PM) :

I think his hair is too styled.
The rest is welly dressed, nice combination with nice shoes. Wander how his trousers look when he stands.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:37 PM) :

I love everything about the look! Especially the sunglasses... reminds me of a young Bob Dylan

Blogger Kasey said ... (1:52 PM) :

I love this shot! The green colors of the park seem to perfectly frame the darker colors of subject. I love the suit too. I usually tend to view suits as uptight business menswear, but there is something so casual and effortless about this.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:52 PM) :

Great photo. He looks like my friend Mark but with darker hair, i like him even more because of that.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:58 PM) :

wow, nice!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:07 PM) :

Some one teach that man how to tie a Windsor.
Is that navy or charcoal? Either way, great with the chocolate brown boots. Actually, they look quite a bit like the D-Squared's I'm rocking right now.
Anyway, becarefull who you invite. I just might show up;-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:12 PM) :

what a cool cat.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:53 PM) :

Great photo, this blog is famous for fashion but really the photo is great for its artistic value more than any info on fashion. The kid oozes attitude and to capture that in a still photo takes ability.

That stated, even if I think the foto is good art...... Cool shoes!

wish i could be in new york for the exhibit.
I echo the point on smoking cigarettes from a previous comment...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:58 PM) :

he looks so much like my exboyfriend that I choked on my salad when the page came up...

he (the ex) was dressing like this ten years ago...

and its not Bob Dylan...or Ryan Adams...

its Beck.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:59 PM) :

great shot....dressed-up but casual rock star! love it. cant wait for the party and show....congrats!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:09 PM) :

blah too hipster !!

those raybands..ugh..that haircut.
how many times have i seen this look over and over on young guys. yuck.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:22 PM) :

He's adorably cute. Love the hair. If only I was about 30 years younger. Those shoes, however, are a too clunky for such a sleek ensemble.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:33 PM) :

warmest congratulations

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:49 PM) :

what a phenomenal photo, so clear and sharp. the parks of nyc are at their most beautiful in the late fall.imo. good luck with your show.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:41 PM) :

ahh, he's a cutie.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:51 PM) :

where will it be located at?

Blogger Laurence John said ... (6:20 PM) :

this whole "i'm DROP DEAD cool ME and probably in a BAND" look is beyond cliche by now. way beyond.

Blogger shabnom said ... (6:23 PM) :

I have to say, the hair is all kinds of perfect. And his inquisitive expression with those sunglasses even as he sits on a park bench in a suit. Fascinating!

Blogger SocalStyle said ... (6:48 PM) :

Mod with a twinge of punk and Ryan Adams?

Either way, I love it.

Gorgeous photo.

Blogger Cheltenhamdailyphoto said ... (6:52 PM) :

What a Mod. Fab. Er.. man.

thanks for the invitation! I'll try..

Blogger tintin said ... (7:00 PM) :

It's 1980 all over again. There's a bit of Trad there. I like it. And I will be at your opening. With my grating and overzealous pretension. Look for the guy in the double breasted blazer, ascot and yachting cap.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:00 PM) :

There is but a brief time in life this works.

Celebrate his time, his look, his choice.

Blogger Elizabeth said ... (7:29 PM) :

This is superb. It's interesting to me that he chose brown shoes with that color scheme.

He really wears the Wayfarers.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:11 PM) :

I love theese rock&roll, vintage and modern type of style, an updated 60's-style.

www.pre-rebel.blogspot.com

Blogger Blaise said ... (8:44 PM) :

I like his hair and his flair (for style).. He's cool even without the cigarette..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:47 PM) :

Personally, I think the whole generalization of "too hipster" is what's cliche and it kind of borderlines on being a hater. Getting dressed is all about appropriating to your mood and your persona and this guy looks wicked sick.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:24 PM) :

Yeah I agree, the look is a slash between conservative/new gen / the strokes.
Loving the Ray bans, nice come back.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 PM) :

him and gerri are both hot. i would go gay for both of em, but i prefer gerri's effected artist style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:22 PM) :

Something nostalgic and textual about this young guy's look. He obviously knows what style references he's making. Sort of clever and darkly humorous. Fun, in a serious way. I like it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:34 AM) :

Great boots.

As a 40+ woman, I have to say that this young man would not turn my head. He's cute, but I agree with others that the look is an old one. However I appreciate that it's new for him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:39 AM) :

i really dislike when people try to put down a picture by saying that they see the look everywhere. it is usually a rude and abrupt comment that comes off being rather thoughtless.

1. these are portraits, not just of people and their outfits, but of the interaction between the people and their surroundings. Sart has taken so many photographs where the people seem like they belong where they are. this boy, this bench. i love the way the teal paint's rubbed off on the bench seat to expose the brown wood, and how the colors are (slightly off but) almost repeated in his outfit. it is fantastic.

2. i know that this is a common look, but what i don't understand is why wearing something you like is a bad thing if it becomes too trendy. if you don't mind wearing what other people are wearing, if you like it, if it makes you feel good and you know it complements you, there should be nothing holding you back from wearing a trendy look. that said, this look really suits him.

3. this is not a fashion shoot, and these are just people living their lives. they did not ask for your criticism, and i highly doubt your snide comments about how those shoes are ugly or that a purse is too big will make sart relook at a picture and think, "why, yes! i see the light! they are in fact so, so wrong, and i will never take another picture with them again." no, instead you just come off as petty and judgmental. these people caught sart's attention and inspired him to produce beautiful photographs. they absolutely do not deserve some of the comments people have made.

i did not mean for this comment to be so... lengthy. sorry.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:19 AM) :

He looks eerily like Bob Dylan!

Blogger onegiantpanda said ... (1:51 AM) :

Are they actually Wayfarers? Either way, I think Wayfarers wear the wearer. They make anyone look good.

This is a great photo. Park benches and parks-as-backdrops cannot be overstated enough.

If there's a line between casual and formal that everyone needs to find, Monsieur Milwaukee here is where we should all turn. (I don't, however, like the -suede?- shoes.) I wish I had the cash to buy more suits. Or even one good one.

Congrats on the exhibition.

Blogger the optimist said ... (1:52 AM) :

first, whoever posed the question 'why is that some men are so good at brooding?' has hit it quite on the head. i get the feeling that alot of life questions would be answered if that point were [ever] resolved....

second, as someone originally from kalamazoo, he is NOT a kzoo. he is something much bigger than that, whether you like his look or not.

thirdly, i think that my dear friend li has pinpointed exactly what it is in this shot [beyond the hands] that makes us wish that he would pop out of the screen: 'his mouth is making me anxious and it is not even doing anything. can you imagine that mouth when it's doing something?'

indeed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:15 AM) :

I love this, it's amazing

Blogger Kate said ... (2:52 AM) :

Perhaps it's just how comfortable with his look that makes it work?
Those shoes are hurting my eyes though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:20 AM) :

too hot for words. the look, the expression, the whole picture is just perfect

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:34 AM) :

he's hot!!!!!

BUT i feel like he'd be one of those im-hotter-than-you-so-don't-try-and-talk-to-me type of boys

sorry if i end up posting this 3 times....

Blogger Zach said ... (7:11 AM) :

The kid clearly thrifted a suit and got the trousers tapered. It looks cool, along with the kid's posturing (yes that includes the cigarette).

Why is it that lately most of the comments have been about people looking like other people. Other than the fact that he is young and skinny this kid bears no resemblence to bob dylan. Shall we consider every young skinny kid a bob dylan look alike? Who cares whether it's more ryan adams or beck, the kid looks cool, and neither of those guys invented the look anyway.

And there is nothing preppy here. shirt isn't preppy, shoes aren't preppy, suit isn't preppy

Blogger Laurence John said ... (8:04 AM) :

anonymous 12:39...

this is Sart's blog and he has editorial control over which comments are seen.

it would be very boring to read 100 "wow, beautiful" comments, not to mention a little suspect.

Blogger lily said ... (10:09 AM) :

Ahh, what a super look! Too much gel in the hair, but really who cares when the rest of his looks SO great?

I especially like the notebook on the bench beside him -- he's not just posing in the park being beautiful, he's writing or sketching or working.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:55 AM) :

It did occurr to me that Milwaukee might not be male at all. Those lips, those thumbs, that skin...

But, he has a hint of shadow and maybe a little razor rash.

He reminds me of K.D. Lang or one of the guys from Blondie.

Blogger dangerdorge said ... (10:56 AM) :

I agree that his hair is a little too "done" but am in love with the look and that NAME. This image really tells a story about what it is to be young and in New York right now. 20 years from now I can imagine looking at this and being brought back to this time in my life. Thanks, Sart.

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:48 PM) :

I like Anon 12.39 comments - these are portraits of real people not abstract images to critique.

And so what if loads of people wear a similar look? I live and work in London and see literally hundreds and hundreds of men wearing suits every day - there's a very big gap between most of them and this guy, you know...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:34 PM) :

I know him. His name is actually John and he's an nyu student

Blogger Grace and Joe IV said ... (3:39 PM) :

Uh I like this allot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:55 AM) :

I love the 60s/Goddard everyday casual suit thing, as worn by this kid. It may make a comeback into the mainstream of fashion, if we're lucky.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:32 AM) :

ahhh---if only i were 15 years younger---i would so have a crush on this guy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:15 PM) :

doherty meets dylan

excellent.

Blogger Susan said ... (3:29 PM) :

Ahhh! What a fantastic photograph!

If I were to ever go cross-dresser this is the look I would emulate.

:)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:00 AM) :

the dark hair, the pale skin, the shades, skinny jeans, suede boots, the suit... i think im in love

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:35 PM) :

i like the photo. it's so much better with a little lightening & sharpening.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:06 AM) :

i tink the clothes that he wore is very much able to express his personality..isnt that wat fashion is all about?yep loved the way he carried the look!SWEET!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:09 PM) :

gorgey!

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (7:52 PM) :

The pale-pale skin makes this colors work so beautifully.
Love the shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:52 PM) :

This has nothing to do with "godard."

another cookie cutter hipster

Blogger Calenna said ... (2:49 AM) :

Sart! That is FABULOUS about your upcoming exhibit - I promptly went to the Danziger website and checked it out. Can't wait - I'll be there!

Blogger L said ... (10:30 AM) :

Cool photo!

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:10 PM) :

Very Ryan Adams. It's a great look.

Blogger Youngest Indie said ... (7:45 PM) :

Wow... Where are more guys like him? I think I'm in love...

Blogger Paige said ... (10:52 PM) :

Cool and relaxed. As what most people should aspire to become.

You're obviously including this shot in your exhibit because it's so goddamn perfect. With the perfect lighting, contrast, composition and all.

By the way, I e-mailed you earlier this day. I'm not sure how often you check or reply to them though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:20 AM) :

He looks like Ed Furlong pre drug bloat. I am not a fan of this look. Too contrived. The MK Olsen sunglasses, styled hair, skinny tie, cigarette. Looks like he sits on that park bench just waiting to be noticed. It worked.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

Some variation of this look is on every high street in England, already played out.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:45 PM) :

wow. I really like this one.

Blogger Janets Planet said ... (1:11 PM) :

Wow. Named Milwaukee and he isnt wearing any green or gold anywhere! :-) Cool look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:57 PM) :

WOW. id like to marry him right now. He is my perfect man. He seems to has arrogance on his face. so nice. The pose, with the shoulders and the cross-arms.
woow. I love him .
hehe

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:45 PM) :

Can you look any cooler than this?

Blogger Kyle Cherek said ... (9:57 PM) :

What will happen If He take his sunglasses Off.....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:49 AM) :

love the glasses. they are so retro. what brand are they?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:32 AM) :

i think he presents more than just a look or style but perhaps a fair idea of an eccentric/rock n roll/kick back lifestyle. very cool sir, very cool indeed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:32 AM) :

nice shoes!! but i also would like to see him without sunglasses.
