The dress on the left looks home-made. Like I just cut it out and pinned it together before I left my house. hmmm
in a recent issue of Elle, prada was described as fashion that impresses other women, but doesn't appeal to men. these looks might fall under the same category. i LOVE it!!! i wouldn't want a guy who didn't understand this, didn't appreciate it. it's wonderful.
I love the shapes this year- I know some (esp. het men) wish we were showing more like in seasons past, but there is construction in these so-called "tent" dresses, it just takes a keen eye to appreciate. I have a theory that it is no coincidence that these romantic/demure/modest shapes are in vogue again now that we are at war. Wouldn't ostentation seem somehow unseemly right now? And there are many ways to be sexual/ sensual without short, tight dresses, transparent tops, & bared bellies (not that those don't have their time and place!). Any thoughts?
The patterned dress is great, it reminds me of an MC Escher drawing and kind of makes me think of math,and who doesn't want that in dress?
But I think the grey and black dress outfit is rather special. The dress - so floaty and lovely! Block colours and love the pear shape. Necklaces well done, straight down hair keeps the overall proportion under control and simple shoes and bag keep it chill and unfussy. Breezy done dark! Love it.

I get that it's Marni and I am usually very pro-Marni (e.g., fab fall '07 color block pumps) but...am I the only one who longs for dresses that are both cool AND flattering?
That is such an interesting fact, editor, about Prada. Thanks for sharing that. I can see how that would be.
I feel that way about Marni and old Jil Sander. It is clothing that, as a woman, I would feel beautiful, comfortable and feminine in a way that isn't obvious. I think what appeals to men and what women feel confident wearing differs greatly.
This is consistently proven in post after post on this blog. I remember the gorgeous shaved head black woman with the voluminous dress. Many comments were about the overwhelming shape.
I wonder what the ratio of men to women was in defense of or against that look? I, for one, thought she looked fantastic, confident and definitely sexy.
All three designers are women who have such strong focus on sensual fabrics that please the wearer.
Two of the three have been well out of my price range but Marni seems to be a relatively affordable investment piece choice. Some innovative fabric options, too.
Whether these ladies are wearing Marni or not, the influence is felt and I am inspired by their looks. Bravo!
These dresses are absolutely fantastic- fashiony yet wearable. I love seeing how those "conceptual" pieces that look scary on the hanger translate to real life, so this is great. Keep them coming, Sart!

lewehrman it's a generalization to be sure. our wonderful sartorialist is a man and he appreciates these things (then again, he's scanning the horizon for cool style, not a date). :)
i think it's something anyone should pay attention to re. their partner - make sure they like you in whatever you like yourself in. it's a good way to make sure you are true to yourself, and loved for it.
Did not mean to imply that Sart was who I was addressing. After all he is the one who is highlighting these two and many of the other gems.
I meant to say that "comment after comment" not "post after post" people seem to need a traditionally sexy fit to be considered attractive.
^^lol, don't worry lewehrman, i'm agreeing with you. it was very very clear what you meant. i just didn't want to sound too bleak about the situation, like all men don't get it, so i pointed out that there are exceptions, like our sartorialist. that said, i do think the majority of men don't get it. but a majority can mean 95 out of 100, or 55 out of 100.
i just hope no woman gives up her prada or marni for a man! ;)
Sorry, I really dont't like dress on the right...maybe it would look better with a hight belt on the waist...but what about black socks?Simply dreadful...i don't understand why so many woman wear socks with sandals!Nothing is more sexy than naked feet in the summertime..
I do not see the appeal in the black and grey dress. It makes herlook pregnant to me.
they're both in head to toe marni. there is a great article about prada in the new yorker (written by michael specter) archives where she talks about the same thing as elle does. it's an older piece and wonderfully written.
I had simply assumed that the solid-toned one is a maternity dress; if it isn't, then...um, I'm not sure why someone would want to wear something that makes her look preggers. It just seems to me a very unflattering dress.
i think there was this girl you took a picture of once that was using this same grey dress (only she was wearing it with grey tights and a black ssandal), I know because I saved the picture so I could look for the same dress... Some time has passed by and I still think it's fabulous. =)
both of these girls are so cute. i'm definitely digging what everyone else is saying about dressing for themselves, not men.

Huh. It's a nice theory but it's fanciful. In fact, Americans are living more ostentatiously than ever. Invasion or no invasion, they've bought bigger houses, bigger cars, bigger TVs, bigger cell phones, bigger boobs. So a few fashionistas in baggy dresses isn't likely to be a marker of some war-driven demureness. Especially since A) Americans are overwhelmingly against the war and B) those two dresses are actually pretty playful, in a good goofy way. For demure, you want the aisle marked 700 Club.
I love the looks of both of these ladies. The dresses are relaxed and comfortable looking.
I am never sure what to think about anklets and heeled shoes worn with dresses by adults. This does look cute. Maybe just not for the middle aged. Anyone have any opionions?
