Love the just-eccentric- enough DIY hat

Wow! Cotton basics have never look so good... She puts everything together wonderfully.

Blogger will anderson said ... (8:47 AM) :

is she a costume designer, or employeed in theater? if not, that's a very eccentric look, and she doesn't need any help getting attention.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:10 AM) :

It's a completely lovely look that also has a searched touch of no sophistication.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:25 AM) :

this is fantastic. she looks effortlessly elegant.

Blogger oxi said ... (9:32 AM) :

it's not that overdone actually, she makes it look like wearing a hat is the most common thing in the world..

Blogger The Spicers said ... (9:59 AM) :

A tribute to Isabella Blow?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:08 AM) :

i wish i could pull off such a funky look without looking ridiculous.

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (10:11 AM) :

She looks fantastic! I love the colour mix and especially the folds and textures.

Blogger yanqin said ... (10:17 AM) :

That cardigan rocks, and is she channelling the 1920s? it's a great, playful look and she has the personality to pull it off.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:38 AM) :

WOW. Cool and Gorgeous!
Love the pout!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:42 AM) :

I really like the whole look. I would wear the whole thing minus the hat, though it does look perfect on her. Great pic!

Blogger Elizabeth said ... (10:42 AM) :

I love the whole thing . . .

except, the necklace seems to throw it all off.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

GREAT look. refined casual.

She should be a stylist. Love how everything is put together, and the big buttons on her cardi.

Blogger pumpkin said ... (10:44 AM) :

while I wouldn't be brave enough to take it up a notch as this lady has done, I love the light, slouchy-comfy-chic base of the long cardi and short skirt. I need a top like that! well, need is relative...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:26 AM) :

You go girl! My isn't style sexy? The winged left foot is a footie's delight! Thanks bella!

Blogger Philippine said ... (11:27 AM) :

this girl is a genius!pretty foolish conception of fashion and style

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:33 AM) :

lovely, fun, perfect spring layering and not over-done. she has a great eye! is this the same girl from two posts below??

Blogger daniel said ... (11:34 AM) :

My fave is how she pulls together an art deco revival look: creams and light blue grays with reflective accents like glass, mirror and crystal. No better way to check your make-up!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:41 AM) :

I love her look, i love that necklace, that hat...everything!!!
me encanta!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

She looks like a younger and stylish Jane Pauley!

Blogger siongc said ... (12:12 PM) :

Ummmm I don't know about this. She looks like she is just trying too hard. And there is too much going on, what with those big glasses, the hat, the necklace, the scarf, the undershirt and the double-breasted cardigan. Too much I say. Too much...

Blogger Jessica Quirk said ... (12:14 PM) :

Like the turn you're taking. Past two NY girls have been rad/real.

Blogger JO said ... (12:17 PM) :

TOO CUTE! She looks liek she just step off the pages of a High Fash Mag!! Love her Look! So wimsical.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:26 PM) :

Lovely but...I'm SO sorry big sunglasses are back. I'm just not feeling them at all. (I wasn't feeling ponchos or gauchos either. If big shoulders come back I'm throwing myself off a bridge.)

Blogger whyioughtta said ... (12:28 PM) :

Love this but I'm with iopine on the necklace issue...would something less chunky have worked better?

That hat's the bomb.

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (12:30 PM) :

She looks so great! Love her style!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:31 PM) :

Oh, I miss these creatively constructed New York street shots!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:56 PM) :

I love it. What a canny pairing of all those neutrals, and the mirrored necklace and witty little hat just make it *pop*.

Being gorgeous helps a little too. And did anyone else feel a "Little Edie" from Grey Gardens vibe coming from her? Wonderful!

Blogger Jennifer said ... (1:10 PM) :

on iheartfashion!!!
isabella blow! :(

Blogger B.Chau said ... (1:46 PM) :

she's absolutely beautiful in every way!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:56 PM) :

I love the Phillip Lim sweater. So cute!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:12 PM) :

She makes it look so easy!

The spo't hat (pronounced "spoat") is not for everyone (though they may try).

It would be fun to see a collection of photos of this girl on different days. She's got a natural gift, doesn't she?

Blogger leslie said ... (2:20 PM) :

wow! this gives those of us who are ordinary (1) inspiration but also (2) a good old-fashioned slap in the face of "why even bother, you'll never even come close..."

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:26 PM) :

studied eccentricity misses the point completely

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:47 PM) :

i must say that i like the little bruises on her legs. that and the quirky smile let you know she's fun.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:06 PM) :

the espadrilles strikes again!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:22 PM) :

Annie Hall updated. Too much.

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:46 PM) :

it's definitely a look.

Blogger missx said ... (4:59 PM) :

I love the way her cardigan buttons! I am very enthusiastic for simple but reworked cardigans at the moment. Too bad it's almost summer.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:13 PM) :

This is why you need to stay in New York. Beautiful in every way.

Blogger Fiona M said ... (5:35 PM) :

she looks absolutely wonderful. that fabulous, thrown together but more than gorgeousness

Blogger Secret Agent said ... (6:00 PM) :

Haha, those are some pretty crazy sunglasses. I like.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:12 PM) :

For some reason, the way it all comes together and the aura she exudes just reminds me of a japanese-swedish model (Anna Tsuchiya)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:53 PM) :

Good sandals and bag. The hat and the pose are ridiculous, and the basic clothing is unexceptional and unflattering. She looks like she could be a beautiful woman, but she's coming off a little too 'mad woman in the attic' here.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (8:00 PM) :

siongc
let me get this straight

You say "too much going on"
you want to take away her "big glasses, the hat, the necklace, the scarf, the undershirt and the double-breasted cardigan"

You would take away everything that makes her look special and unique

She would be left wearing only shoes

This is why i censor some comments.

Blogger Miss Stylologist said ... (8:05 PM) :

Wow. This looks like a picture perfect fashion image right out of a magazine. Great photography. Great subject. I love this image.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:17 PM) :

new york is the best. no other city can compare. this chick has it going on. watch her be from stockholm or something. new york still rules. so does this site. later. -Z1

Blogger MARIA H said ... (8:49 PM) :

Amazing! Waht about going to the hipster temple...WillyBurg! You might have fun there on Sat. afternoon.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:15 PM) :

Looks pretty, but she seem like she's trying too hard.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 PM) :

It's so carefree and thrown together and it all looks so impossibly perfect. She looks like a model, perhaps something that Galliano would do.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:43 PM) :

a.dorable.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:44 PM) :

Dearest Sart,

She is lovely. Your eye is sharp and mature. This is refreshing to see from all the uniformity in the material world. She is playful and doesn't take herself seriously at all. Seems to be "vogue-ing" for the camera, for us, and for you. I applaud your instinct.

Do you do all your own reading of comments and censoring, as you mention below? I am touched by your heart. xoxox, Lady

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:47 PM) :

though she is one of the few people i've ever seen who actually know how to tie an espadrille properly! plus the shade of them blends perfectly with her leg, giving her a longer look, instead of cut-off stumpy as they can be wont to do to a girl. let her just wear the shoes - she'd still be just as perfect! she just knows what she's doing and she's got it going *on* !

Blogger Blaise said ... (9:48 PM) :

goodness.. Only in New York.. I love New York..

Blogger siongc said ... (12:28 AM) :

Sorry Sart if I have offended you. I feel a little misunderstood. I do think she has a lot going on, and (for my own preference) I would have taken both the scarf and the necklace off because she looks a little top heavy right now, and thus she looks like she is trying too hard. And really do think that her personality will shine right through regardless of those 'extraneous' items because you did capture a vivacious personality in your photograph. I was merely expressing my opinion and am sorry if I have offended anyone.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:32 AM) :

I love her attitude and humor. I'd like to see more of her pretty face however, so I would have advised her to wear either the hat or the glasses but not both together.

Lisa

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:14 AM) :

"She would be left wearing only shoes."

I have no problem with that image.

Blogger Verdent said ... (1:16 AM) :

She is so much fun! So natural! Reminds me of something from down the rabbit hole...
I especially like the way that her cardi folds and drapes. Superb way to pull off greys and browns together.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:37 AM) :

Ohhh she's just fantastic with her eyes over sunglasses, her grey jacket nice finished !!! A Hat like in 30's or a little bit Chaplin !!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:15 AM) :

The hat gives the perfect finishing touch to this outfit. I love that it's quirky and fashionable at the same time. Wonderful accessorization.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:23 AM) :

If this is >effortless elegance< as someone suggested it gives a totally new meaning to the word effortless-that´s for sure

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:22 PM) :

i love everything about this look!

getting the right hat is actually kind of difficult, as i recently discovered... if only the corner haberdashery would make its reappearance and we wouldn't have to resort to shadowy pictures on ebay!

Blogger hoi polloi said ... (12:46 PM) :

I like the necklace, its actually very amusing

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

about the siongc comment -- i read it as saying not that she should remove ALL the elements listed, but only that together, it was a bit much. so, maybe remove a and b, or c and d, but nowhere did the poster state that she should take everything off except her shoes. i think that "too much" is fair criticism, and while i support your right to censor comments (esp about a subject's weight, etc) i don't think that one crossed any line . . . ? i think it's a lovely, stylish look, but i also enjoy reading comments from those who disagree with me, and i hope you'll continue to post them, within reason.
:)

BELÍSSIMA!!!!!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 PM) :

I LOVE IT!!! so quirky yet still cool. the necklace - i don't understand why don't people like it? it's my favorite part. it sets it all off. makes it quirky and funny rather than like she's trying to be perfect. is it mirrored? it looks like a tag-sale tag to me. i want to make one myself. and the hat... well the hat. what can one say. awesome.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:13 AM) :

I find reading this range of comments quite funny. Bottom line she's not wearing anything too fancy - a cardigan, vest, skirt, shoes, scarf, hat, sunnies and necklace. Nome of these pieces are very elaborate in themselves. But lots of people seem annoyed - why? Maybe because she's striking a provocative pose? Still it is hard to argue that she is anything but a sartorialiste...

Blogger kristin said ... (8:31 AM) :

Everything but those silly, ironic big 1980's sunglasses, please.

But on the positive, I love her cotton clothing...I'd never wear the hat, but she looks cute.

Blogger Emily said ... (10:49 PM) :

she is fabulous

Blogger in defense of retail therapy said ... (7:40 AM) :

hat is brilliant. superb.

Blogger Andrea Martínez Maugard said ... (2:47 AM) :

I'm just fascinated by her style, gorgeous and simple!

Blogger embleyann said ... (3:50 PM) :

I know her! We went to school together, and she was just as fabulous then!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:41 PM) :

Her bag is sooo cute? Is it Moschino?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:53 AM) :

She's the female version of Johnny Depp. The tilted hat reminds me of him. I love the color scheme...the light taupe-ish scarf with the warm hues of her shoes, hat and bag. Lovely. I wish I had the boldness and height to pull that off.

Blogger m said ... (8:35 PM) :

Caught my eye for sure...hats are rad.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:06 PM) :

That hat is incredible !

pps. thanks sartoralist for your marvelous pictures - ur my second favorite to glamourai's blog.
