The Sartorialist Profiled In Focus Magazine

So I'm excited, Focus (the Newsweek of Germany) ran a profile on The Sartorialist this weeks. Below I have translated and paraphrased a few of the questions and answers. It seems odd to translate something that was said in English to German and then from German back to English, if the interview sounds odd, I'm blaming it on that.

Focus: The Fashion Blog "The Sartorialist" has grown quickly in the past half year to 110,000 visitors per month. What is the secret to your success?

The Sartorialist: I made The Sartorialist because I kept seeing guys on the streets of New York or that worked in the fashion industry that I thought were just as fashionable as the models I would see in a GQ photo shoot

F: What is a Sartorialist?
S: A gentleman that has developed a style that helps express his personality.

F: How did you become one?
S: My style icon was Giorgio Armani growning up. In college I majored in Costume Construction and I did marketing for Valentino. I also owned a showroom that promoted young designers like Peter Som.

F: So what is personal style?
S: I like to mix modern and classic items, however I don't like items that are to precious.

F: What rules do you follow and which do you break?
S: i don't worry about the rules.

F: Which stores do you like?
S: 10 Corso Como in Milano, Bergdorf Goodman and the Apple Computer store in New York

S-
Congratulations and much continued success.

What do you mean by "items too precious?"

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (8:33 AM) :

Often people get a bit stiff when they are wearing expensive clothes, they treat the clothes like they are very precious.

I am German and I do read your Blog for a while now. It happens to be one of my favorites. So I am very sorry that I have to disappoint you: FOCUS is not Germany's Newsweek. It simply isn't.

Saying so is like claiming that Hennes and Mauritz is Sweden's Anderson and Sheppard.

Trotzdem: weiter so!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:43 AM) :

Well done!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:45 AM) :

what type of jacket are you wearing in the photo??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 AM) :

I love the fact that you said the Apple store was one of your favorites. I see the most stylish people there!
Congratulatiions on the pioneering of a new and innovative fashion journalism pheonomenon!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:40 AM) :

Dear Scott,

Congrats on your acclaim. Personally, I rather turn to your site for delight and inspiration than the fashion magazines because it becomes clearer to me everyday that your work comes from that distant land called Authenticity.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:29 AM) :

congrats

keep it going!

also, great to see your picture... being handsome certainly makes being stylish more easy! ;-)

best wishes

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:43 AM) :

Yes, thank you for showing us what is, reminding us of what was, and hinting at what's coming...in mens and women's fashion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:23 PM) :

Great to see this becoming so successful. It's a great site.

Three questions if you don't mind:

1) Is that a Husky jacket you're wearing?
2) What camera do you use?
3) How do you approach people for photographs and avoid being turned down?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:33 PM) :

Congratulations! Love your blog & have been following it almost from the start!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:36 PM) :

awesome. well-deserved.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:45 PM) :

nice. seems like a simple and solid interview. and i agree- i always remind myself that my clothes are there to serve me not the other way around. wrecking things is too much fun. especially when they are beautiful...

Congrats, I look forward to your work come this spring. It felt good today, 60 degrees and sunny, and I saw lots of fashionable folk on the streets today.

Blogger mahret said ... (6:47 PM) :

I ♥ your Blog, nearly as much as New York.
So where're the fashionable/stylish German Blogs then? I guess that's because Style and Germany just don't fit together that well?
I read you Blog everyday and sometimes maybe just to reasure myself there's something else out there. Other people who know how to play the fashion game properly! Thank you...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:57 PM) :

Yes, he IS hot! Yay!

Congrats, you! Yay again!

(It's funny. I did an interview for a German mag (Der Spiegel) and it was so fun reading it translated back to English. I truly understand what you mean!)

Scott. You look hot. Call me!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:08 PM) :

Congratulations.

Great photos, nicely composed.

What makes this blog unique is the mixture people with money, no money, old, young...all loving life, fashion and style. There is a picture of a young man in the meat packing district and of a married couple of "a certain age" sharing a happy moment.

You deserve much credit for bringing your joy to us!

Blogger Max said ... (7:34 PM) :

I've been a rabid reader since i ran across a link from Gothamist.

Keep dropping knowledge, style, and inspiration on us.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:45 PM) :

I have the same Barbour jacket (Eskdale?), and until right now have felt unsure about wearing the collar "up".

But now I am officially validated. Great interview

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:09 AM) :

Fame at last :) congratulations! They are well deserved.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:56 PM) :

scott,

i haven't read your archives so what i'm about to say may be inaccurate about the locations of your photos.

i've noticed that a lot of your street style pics are taken in soho, meatpacking and the chelsea flea market. and maybe this influences your choices of people to photograph. but these people are the most uninteresting i have ever seen to be honest.

what about hanging out on the subway? i see so many people from all walks of life who have amazing style from all types of socio-economic backgrounds. sartorial or not. nyc has way more variety and interesting people!

just trying to make sure your street style pics are on par with the quality level of the other articles.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (3:16 PM) :

Now that the weather is nicer and the days are longer i will have the ability to shoot in a wider variety of locations. Brooklyn, Coney Island, Queens

Check the Nov. Archives - I did a lot of shots around the Marathon route.

Shooting on the Subway is tough b/c i think the people could feel a little trapped - I know i would.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:26 PM) :

i'll check out the archives.

brooklyn - especially williamsburg - can be good on weekends. granted lots of the kids look like urban outfitters rejects with the pseudo i'm iggy pop/karen o look (tight peg leg jeans have been on their way out for a year now.) but once in a while there you will find someone in their 30's to 50's who has lived there since the 80's-90's who will have incredible original sartorial style.

i think you would do well on the subway if it's not rush hour. you seem to be a nice guy and the people you approach are probably proud of their appearance. and for someone to validate it by putting their image online might just make their day!

i'm too lazy to do a blog myself - otherwise i would start posting pictures of people also.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:10 PM) :

Congrats that many are recognizing your fine and interesting blog.

Like the Barbour coat, classic old English style.

BTW, Focus is quite a decent mag.

Also, Glueckwunsch!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:37 PM) :

Oh, what pretty eyes!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:23 PM) :

Dear Sartorialist!

This desert denizon, this relic from the punk age, this gal who loves New York but can't quite hack living there, this wearer of summer/winter uniforms, this grrrrl out here on a dirt road

loves yer blog.

Thanks Sweetie!
